Identification
The white-striped free-tailed bat is the largest of Australia's eleven molossid species, a robust bat with distinctive markings. Its deep chocolate-brown pelage features well-defined white stripes running beneath the wings, with occasional white patches on the upper underside—characteristics that give the species its common name. Individuals weigh 33 to 41 grams and measure 85 to 100 millimetres in head and body length, with a free tail extending 40 to 55 millimetres that can be folded during flight to reduce drag.
This species possesses several striking anatomical features adapted for high-speed flight. Large, forward-pointing ears measuring 20 to 25 millimetres are exceptionally broad and distinctly ribbed. The wingtips resemble the crescent form found on fast-flying birds, optimised for low-drag flight at speeds up to 17 metres per second. The skin is very dark and blackish with a slight pink hue, and males are noticeably larger than females. A hairless tragus and deeply wrinkled upper lip are also characteristic.
Range & Habitat
This species is endemic to Australia and widespread across much of the continent, though notably absent from the northern third. Historically not recorded in Tasmania, surveys conducted between 2009 and 2013 confirmed its presence there, likely as a periodic visitor or vagrant. In Western Australia, the species is restricted south of the 20°S latitude during the austral spring and summer breeding season, then extends northward in winter, demonstrating clear seasonal migratory patterns.
The white-striped free-tailed bat occurs across diverse habitats ranging from closed forest to open floodplain, and adapts well to urban areas. It is found throughout temperate and subtropical regions of Australia. The species relies on over-mature and dead eucalypt trees with large trunk diameters (exceeding 89 centimetres) for roosting, seeking the large cavities that develop in these trees and accessing them through multiple unobstructed branches and trunk hollows.

The white-striped free-tailed bat is a highly specialised aerial interceptor with exceptional flight capabilities. Its crescent-shaped wingtips and aerodynamic body design allow it to reach speeds of up to 17 metres per second while minimising drag. The species is seasonally migratory, shifting its range northward during winter months in response to environmental conditions.
This bat employs a distinctive echolocation system that sets it apart from most other microbat species. Its typical echolocation calls operate at 10–15 kilohertz, audible to the human ear as "pink-pink-pink" or "metallic ting-ting-ting" sounds, emitted at a rate of one to two calls per second. Call structure varies according to flight stage: steep frequency-modulated pulses during initial flight, transitioning to lower frequency modulation above the canopy, then reverting to constant-frequency calls. Like all echolocating bats, it uses a terminal-phase buzz call to locate, approach, and capture prey.

As a widespread and common endemic species, the white-striped free-tailed bat can be encountered across much of Australia during appropriate seasons. The species is most reliably found in temperate and subtropical regions, with activity patterns shifting seasonally. In Western Australia, winter months offer the best opportunity to observe northward-migrating populations, while spring and summer are optimal in southern regions where the species breeds.
The Greater Brisbane Region of South East Queensland provides documented roosting habitat where bats can be observed around over-mature eucalypt trees with large cavities. Urban areas throughout the species' range also support populations, making sightings possible in unexpected locations. Tasmania may offer occasional sightings, particularly during winter months when the species may visit as a vagrant.

The species' high-speed flight—reaching up to 17 metres per second—demands fast shutter speeds and responsive autofocus systems.
