African Harrier-Hawk

Identification

The African harrier-hawk is a medium-sized raptor measuring 60–66 centimetres in length. Adults are distinctive: the upperparts, head and breast are pale grey, while the belly is white with fine dark barring. The broad wings are pale grey with a black trailing edge fringed by a narrow white line, and the tail is black with a single broad white band. A striking feature is the bare facial patch, usually red or yellow in colour. Young birds are duller, with pale brown replacing grey and dark brown replacing black. Sexes are similar in appearance.

One of the most remarkable adaptations of this species is its double-jointed ankles, which enable it to reach into otherwise inaccessible holes and cracks for prey—a trait it shares with the distantly related Neotropical crane hawk. The bird's call is a distinctive whistled sueee-sueee-sueee.

Range & Habitat

The African harrier-hawk is a common raptorial species throughout most of Africa south of the Sahara, being most numerous in tropical western Africa and becoming less common in East and South Africa. The species is remarkably adaptable, occupying diverse habitats including thick rainforest, forest edges, riparian areas, agricultural land, and human-occupied areas. It is one of the most common raptors in traditional rural villages, and notably, it has adapted well to urban environments, breeding in palm trees within cities and urban gardens.

Behaviour & Diet

The African harrier-hawk is omnivorous, feeding on the fruit of oil palms as well as hunting small vertebrates. Its unique anatomy allows it to raid the nests of cavity-nesting birds such as barbets and woodhoopoes for eggs and nestlings. The species has also been recorded preying on introduced species including feral pigeons, house sparrows, and eastern gray squirrels.

This hawk employs four distinct hunting strategies: low soaring (the most common method), high soaring, perch hunting, and canopy and ground foraging. During low soaring, it flies close to the canopy and uses the mobbing behaviour of small passerine birds to locate their nest sites. When hunting reptiles in open areas, it uses high soaring at heights up to 100 metres before descending rapidly. It also perches to hunt insects and walks through vegetation searching crevices for prey.

Best Time & Places to See It

Breeding seasons vary across the species' range: in Nigeria, breeding occurs from March to August, while south of the equator it coincides with austral summer—November–December in South Africa and September–November in Zambia, Malawi, and Zimbabwe. The species is most commonly observed in western Africa and in traditional rural villages of eastern Guinea-Bissau. Look for them soaring low over forest canopy or perched near nest sites.

Photography Tips

The pale grey and white plumage of this species photographs well in bright light, making it suitable for both long-distance and detailed shots. When photographing, watch for birds engaged in low soaring over the canopy, where they are frequently mobbed by smaller birds—this activity can provide dynamic compositional opportunities. The distinctive bare facial patch and eye make close-up portraits rewarding. During courtship displays, pairs can be photographed soaring together and occasionally performing talon-touching manoeuvres in flight.
