Where to See & Photograph the Amur Falcon

Identification

The Amur falcon is a small raptor easily distinguished by sexual dimorphism. Adult males are characteristically dark sooty grey above with distinctive rufous thighs and vent. In flight, their white wing lining contrasts strikingly with dark wing feathers—a key field mark that separates them from the closely related red-footed falcon, which has darker grey wing linings. Males can occasionally be confused with melanistic Gabar goshawks in Africa, but the chestnut on the vent is diagnostic. Females are more challenging to identify, sharing a pattern common to many falcons, yet are distinctive in having an orange eye-ring, red cere, and reddish-orange feet. Juveniles can be confused only with young red-footed falcons, from which they lack buffy underwing coverts. The wings are long, spanning 63–71 cm, and at rest the wing tips reach or extend just beyond the tail-tip, typical of falcons.

Range & Habitat

The Amur falcon breeds in south-eastern Siberia and Northern China, with populations ranging from Transbaikalia, Amurland, and the northern Mongolian region to parts of North Korea. It undertakes one of the most remarkable migrations of any falcon, traveling in large flocks across India and Sri Lanka before crossing the Arabian Sea to winter along the coasts of southern and eastern Africa. Return migration routes run slightly more northward. During migration, birds typically travel at heights above 1,000 metres, utilizing strong westward winds at around 3,000 metres altitude. Their breeding habitat consists of open wooded country with marshes, where they roost colonially on exposed perches or wires during migration and non-breeding periods.

Behaviour & Diet

The Amur falcon is primarily insectivorous, hunting mainly late in the evening or early morning. It captures a wide range of insects both in flight—sometimes by hovering—and on the ground by alighting to pick up prey. The winter diet in Africa consists almost entirely of insects, though breeding birds in their northern range take small birds, mammals, and amphibians to feed their young. African rains produce abundant swarms of termites, locusts, ants, and beetles; notably, the falcon's migration across the Arabian Sea coincides with the migration of dragonflies (Pantala flavescens), which are thought to provide crucial sustenance during this arduous ocean crossing.

The breeding season occurs from May to June in south-eastern Siberia and Northern China. Birdwatchers hoping to observe Amur falcons during their extraordinary migration should focus on India and Sri Lanka during the transit period, or on the African coast during the non-breeding season. The species' tendency to migrate in large flocks increases sighting opportunities. Several pairs may nest close together during breeding season, favoring areas within their home range that have not recently been disturbed by fire. Their habit of roosting colonially on exposed perches makes them relatively observable during migration.

Photography Tips

Photographers should focus on capturing the distinctive field marks that make this species identifiable. For males, emphasize the white wing lining contrasting against dark flight feathers in flight shots—this is the most diagnostic feature separating them from the red-footed falcon. The rufous thighs and vent are also striking in perched birds. For females, the orange eye-ring, red cere, and reddish-orange feet are the key identifiers to capture. Early morning and evening light during hunting sessions will reveal the falcon's aerial prowess as it captures insects. The colonial roosting behavior during migration offers opportunities for flock photography, and the bird's relatively small size means a good telephoto lens is essential.
