Black-faced Monarch

Identification

The Black-faced Monarch is a distinctive small flycatcher with grey upperparts and rufous underparts. Its most striking feature is the prominent black facial patch that adorns mature birds, giving the species its common name. Within the genus Monarcha, it is most closely related to the Black-winged Monarch.

Range & Habitat

This species is found along the eastern seaboard of Australia, with a significant migratory population that moves to New Guinea during the austral winter (May to August). The Black-faced Monarch shows a strong preference for rainforest and wet forest habitats, where it hunts among dense vegetation and canopy layers.

Behaviour & Diet

As a member of the monarch flycatcher family, this species is an active insectivore that hunts flying insects from perches within the forest. Like other monarchs, it employs quick sallies to catch prey in flight, combining patience with explosive bursts of activity. The species is vocal and conspicuous within its preferred habitat, often drawing attention through its calls and restless foraging behaviour.

The black facial markings on mature birds provide excellent contrast for photography, particularly in dappled rainforest light. Position yourself near fruiting trees or flowering plants that attract insects, as the bird's hunting behaviour will bring it into more open perches.
