Black Phoebe

Identification

The black phoebe is a medium-sized flycatcher measuring 16 cm (6.3 in) in length and weighing between 15 and 22 grams. Its striking plumage is predominantly black with a distinctive white belly and undertail coverts that form an inverted "V" on the lower breast. The sexes are identical in appearance, and plumage does not vary seasonally, making identification consistent year-round. Juveniles are distinguishable by their browner overall coloration, cinnamon-brown feather tips on the body, and brown wing-bars. The bird has brown irises and black legs, feet, and beak.

One of the most characteristic and easily observed features is the black phoebe's distinctive "tail-wagging" motion, in which the tail is lowered and its feathers fanned out—a behavior that can help confirm identification in the field. Its song consists of two alternating phrases (tee-hee, tee-ho or sisee, sitsew), commonly sung by males but performed by both sexes. The bird accomplishes almost all locomotion by direct flight with steady wing beats.

Range & Habitat

The black phoebe breeds from southwest Oregon and California south through Central and South America, with its range extending through the western United States, Mexico, and into South America. In the United States, it is found in river valleys along the Oregon coast and on the western side of California's Coast Ranges, throughout the Colorado River valley, and occasionally as far north as southern Nevada and southwestern Utah. Its range also includes Arizona, central New Mexico, and extends southeast to the Lower Rio Grande Valley. In Central America it breeds on Baja California and interior mainland Mexico southwest to Panama, while in South America it inhabits the coastal mountains of Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, western Bolivia, and northwestern Argentina.

The black phoebe is always found near water and occurs year-round throughout most of its range, being more sedentary than other birds in its genus, though northern populations are partially migratory. It frequents diverse habitats including coastal cliffs, river and lake banks, and even park fountains. Crucially, suitable habitat must include a supply of mud for nest building, and this specialized nesting requirement likely contributes to the species' somewhat irregular range.

Behaviour & Diet

The black phoebe is mainly insectivorous, employing a characteristic hunting strategy: it waits patiently on a perch before sallying out to catch prey in the air. This flycatching behavior makes it an engaging species to observe as it hunts throughout its wetland and riparian habitats.

The bird constructs an open cup nest which is placed under a cliff or bridge and cemented in place with mud—a specialized nesting behavior that ties the species firmly to environments where both water and suitable mud sources are available. Both males and females sing, though males vocalize more frequently.
