Identification

The brown fish owl is a large, robust owl measuring 48 to 61 cm in body length with a wingspan of 125 to 140 cm. Its most distinctive features include prominent ear tufts, rufous-brown upperparts heavily streaked with black or dark brown, and buffy-fulvous underparts with wavy dark streaks and fine barring. The throat is conspicuously white and puffed, the bill is dark, and the iris is a striking golden yellow. The featherless feet are bright yellow—an adaptation for its specialized hunting lifestyle. Females are noticeably larger than males, and two-year-old birds appear somewhat paler than adults. This species is slightly larger and darker than the buffy fish owl.

Range & Habitat

The brown fish owl is native across a vast range spanning from Turkey through the Middle East and South Asia to Southeast Asia, including India, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Thailand, southern China, Indochina, and the Malay Peninsula. Of the four living fish owl species, it is the most widely distributed and most common. Four subspecies are recognized across this extensive range, which covers over 7,000 km. The species inhabits forests and wooded wetlands, favoring areas where water and woodland habitat intersect.

Behaviour & Diet

As its name suggests, the brown fish owl is a specialized fish-eater with remarkable physical adaptations for this hunting strategy. It has longer legs than typical owls and rough textured feet—features that aid in capturing slippery fish. Unlike most owls, its feathers are not soft and lack the specialized fringes that enable silent flight; consequently, this species produces audible wing beats during hunting. The brown fish owl will hunt on foot, wading into shallow water to pursue its prey, rather than relying solely on silent aerial ambush like terrestrial hunting owls. Its powerful, curved talons feature sharp cutting edges similar to those of eagle owls, making them effective fish-catching tools.

Wooded waterside areas, including rivers, lakes, and wetland forests, offer the best opportunities for encounters. Water-based habitats during daylight hours may yield sightings, particularly where the owl hunts in shallow areas.
