Crowned Eagle

Identification

The crowned eagle is Africa's most powerful raptor relative to its prey's body size, despite being lighter and having a shorter wingspan than the continent's largest eagle, the martial eagle. With an overall length up to 90 cm, it possesses unusually large talons and strong legs capable of crushing prey skulls. This forest specialist is the sole living member of the genus Stephanoaetus, representing a genetically distinct lineage among Africa's booted eagles and filling an ecological role comparable to South America's harpy eagle.

Range & Habitat

Found throughout sub-Saharan Africa, the crowned eagle shows a restricted range in Southern Africa, occurring mainly in easterly areas. It favors riparian woodlands and various forest types, demonstrating remarkable habitat adaptability for a large, forest-dependent raptor. However, the species faces mounting pressure from widespread tropical forest destruction across its range.

Behaviour & Diet

Mammals dominate the crowned eagle's diet, with principal prey varying across its range: monkeys, antelopes, rodents, hyraxes, and viverrids are all significant. The eagle regularly takes larger prey including bushpigs, pangolins, and ungulates such as bushbuck weighing up to 30 kg. Birds comprise a considerable dietary component in some populations, with urban populations in Durban showing 25% avian prey. The species is exceptionally bold and ferocious; documented nest remains include large primates weighing 11 kg. While domestic animals are occasionally taken, they typically comprise only a small percentage of prey in wild populations.
