Identification

D'Arnaud's barbet is a small East African bird, growing to about eight inches in length. Like all barbets, it is characterized by the distinctive bristles that fringe its heavy bill—a feature from which the family derives its name. The species exhibits three geographical races across its range: darnaudii, böhmi, and emini, each showing subtle regional variation.

Range & Habitat

This barbet is found across East Africa, with its range spanning from southeastern South Sudan and southwestern Ethiopia through Uganda and Kenya into Tanzania. The nominate race darnaudii occurs in southeastern South Sudan, southwestern Ethiopia, northeastern Uganda, and west-central Kenya. The böhmi race ranges from southern and eastern Ethiopia to southern Somalia, eastern Kenya, and northeastern Tanzania, while emini is restricted to north-central Tanzania, including areas near Dar es Salaam. The species is equally at home in trees or on the ground, adapting readily to various woodland and scrubland habitats throughout its range.

Behaviour & Diet

D'Arnaud's barbet feeds on insects, fruits, and seeds, foraging both arboreal and terrestrial microhabitats. The species is notably social, often vocalizing in groups with a distinctive chewp call, frequently accompanied by simultaneous tail raising and fanning. Breeding birds perform a striking and synchronized dance, with male and female facing each other on nearby twigs while they twitch, bob, and sing in mechanical-like movements. Nesting is accomplished through impressive burrow construction: pairs excavate a vertical tunnel two to three feet into the ground with a characteristic sideways and upward turn leading to the nest chamber.

D'Arnaud's barbet occurs throughout East Africa in appropriate habitat. The species' vocal nature and gregarious habits make it relatively conspicuous compared to many other barbet species. Look for it in open woodlands, scrublands, and grassland areas with scattered trees across Kenya, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Uganda, and South Sudan. Its preference for ground-level foraging and drumming activities makes it accessible to patient observers in suitable habitat.
