Identification

The Eurasian hobby is a small, slim falcon measuring 29–36 cm in length with a wingspan of 74–84 cm and weighing 175–285 g. Adults are instantly recognizable by their slate-grey upperparts with a dark crown and two distinctive short black moustache stripes. The throat is unstreaked white, while the thighs and undertail coverts display unstreaked rufous plumage—the characteristic red "trousers" and vent visible in close views. The rest of the underparts are whitish with black streaks. Sexes are similar in appearance. Juveniles are considerably browner, with scaled upper parts and streaked buffy thighs and undertail coverts. The species displays a distinct first-summer plumage that aids identification during the bird's early development.

Range & Habitat

The Eurasian hobby breeds across the Palearctic realm, with two recognized subspecies. The nominate race, F. s. subbuteo, is found across Africa, Europe, and Central and East Asia, wintering in Central and South Africa and South Asia as a long-distance migrant. The smaller subspecies F. s. streichi is mainly resident, ranging from Myanmar to south China and north Indochina without undertaking migration. The species is a rare vagrant to North America, with records from Massachusetts, Washington, and Alaska in the United States, as well as Newfoundland and British Columbia in Canada; it has also appeared in Australia and Brazil.

This hobby favors open country including farmland, marshes, taiga, and savannah, with a preference for lowlands containing scattered small woods where it can nest and hunt effectively.

Behaviour & Diet

An elegant and acrobatic hunter, the hobby appears sickle-like in flight with its long pointed wings and square tail, often resembling a swift when gliding with folded wings. It is fast and powerful, capable of extraordinary aerial maneuvers. The bird takes large insects such as dragonflies, which it skillfully transfers from talons to beak and consumes while soaring in slow circles. It also captures small bats and small birds in flight, using its speed and aerobatic prowess to hunt swallows and even swifts on the wing. Barn swallows and house martins have evolved a characteristic alarm call in response to hobbies, and the falcon is known to harass swallows at roosts and during dispersal. Outside the breeding season, hobbies are crepuscular, hunting principally in mornings and evenings, and may move in small groups during migration.

Hobbies nest in old nests of crows and rooks, typically in trees at the edge of hedges or spinneys where they can observe intruders from considerable distances. They have a single brood, laying 2–3 eggs from June to August, with incubation lasting 28 days. Both parents share incubation duties, though the female undertakes the greater share. The species is notably bold and courageous, and was historically valued in falconry for hunting birds such as quails, larks, hoopoes, and drongos.

Best Time & Places to See It

The hobby's presence varies by location and season. In Europe and Asia, the nominate subspecies is present during breeding season but undertakes long-distance migration to African and Asian wintering grounds. The resident F. s. streichi can be encountered year-round in Myanmar, south China, and north Indochina. Look for hobbies hunting over open lowland habitats with scattered woods, particularly during early morning and evening hours when they are most active outside the breeding season. Migration periods may offer opportunities to observe them in small groups.

Photographing hobbies demands quick reflexes and patience, as these are swift and acrobatic fliers. Position yourself in open habitats with good sight lines where you can anticipate their hunting patterns, particularly during crepuscular hours when activity peaks. Early morning and evening light will enhance the hobby's striking slate-grey plumage and distinctive facial markings. Watch for characteristic behavior such as the transfer of prey from talons to beak mid-flight or slow soaring circles as the bird consumes large insects. When breeding, locate nesting trees at the edges of spinneys or hedges—distant observation points will minimize disturbance while allowing documentation of bold and courageous behavior. The bird's swift flight and resemblance to swifts when gliding require fast shutter speeds and continuous autofocus tracking to capture sharp images of this elegant aerial predator.
