Grassland Sparrow

Identification

The Grassland Sparrow is a compact, robust sparrow measuring about 13 cm (5 inches) in length. It features a proportionally large head, short tail, short wings, and notably long legs. The upperparts are brownish-grey heavily streaked with black, while the breast and flanks display greyish-buff or pinkish-buff plumage. The underparts are dull white. Look for a narrow white eye-ring and distinctive yellow spots on the lores (front of the face) and on the bend of the wing—these yellow markings are key identification features. The song is unmistakable: a high-pitched but thin series of plaintive phrases rendered as "eee, telee, teeeee." While superficially similar to the Yellow-browed Sparrow, the Grassland Sparrow has less yellow on the face and a distinctly different voice.

Range & Habitat

This species is found throughout the western half of South America, with a range encompassing Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, French Guiana, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay, and Venezuela. It inhabits tall savannah grassland as its primary habitat, but readily uses pastureland and cerrado vegetation. The bird is present in lowland areas and at elevations up to 1,100 m (3,600 ft), with records possibly reaching higher altitudes in southern Venezuela. It favors dry savannah and subtropical or tropical seasonally wet or flooded lowland grasslands.

Behaviour & Diet

The Grassland Sparrow is notably secretive, feeding on the ground where it remains well-hidden in vegetation. When disturbed, it flits rapidly away into cover. However, it becomes more conspicuous when singing from an elevated perch, and can be observed feeding in the open during early morning and late evening hours. The diet consists primarily of grass seeds and other seeds gleaned from the ground, supplemented with small insects—particularly important during the breeding season. The bird builds a cup-shaped nest on the ground, characteristically constructing a runway through the surrounding foliage that leads to the nest entrance.

The Grassland Sparrow is a common bird throughout its extensive range and poses no conservation concerns. Early morning and late evening are the most productive times for observation, when birds feed openly in grassland areas. In savannah and pastureland habitats within its broad South American range, patience and careful listening for its distinctive thin, high-pitched song will reward the observer. The bird's secretive nature requires careful approach and waiting quietly near suitable grassland habitat.

Photographing this species presents distinct challenges due to its secretive habits and preference for dense vegetation. Early morning and evening feeding sessions offer the best opportunities for photography in open grassland. Use a long lens (at least 400–600 mm) to avoid flushing birds from cover. The bird's distinctive yellow lores and wing spot are diagnostic features worth capturing in detail. Listen carefully for the thin, high-pitched song—this acoustic cue can guide you to singing birds perched visibly above the grass, which present ideal photographic opportunities. Exercise patience, move slowly, and allow the bird's natural behavior to unfold rather than pursuing it aggressively.
