Javan Hawk-Eagle

Identification

The Javan hawk-eagle is a medium-sized raptor approximately 60 cm long, instantly recognizable by its striking plumage and distinctive long black crest tipped with white, held almost vertically on the head. Its crown is black, contrasting sharply with a chestnut head and nape, while the back and wings are dark brown. The tail is lighter brown with wide cream stripes. The throat is creamy white with a bold black stripe extending to the whitish breast and underparts, which are heavily barred with chestnut. This majestic and intricately patterned eagle has a rufous head and neck, heavily barred black below. Juvenile birds are similar in coloration but have plainer underparts and a duller head. The sexes are similar in appearance.

Range & Habitat

This eagle is an Indonesian endemic found exclusively in the humid tropical forests of Java. Its range spans both East and West Java, with recorded locations including Sempu Island, Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park, Meru Betiri National Park, and Alas Purwo National Park in the east. The species shows a strong preference for undisturbed forest habitat, particularly areas with Rasamala trees, which play an important role in its ecological niche.

Behaviour & Diet

The Javan hawk-eagle is believed to be monogamous, with females typically laying a single egg in a nest positioned high atop forest trees. Its diet consists mainly of birds, lizards, fruit bats, and small mammals, with a particular preference for Javanese rats. This specialization on specific prey species makes the bird vulnerable to habitat changes that affect food availability.

Finding this critically endangered raptor in the wild is an exceptional challenge reserved for dedicated birders. The primary locations for potential sightings are the protected areas of East Java, particularly Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park, Meru Betiri National Park, and Alas Purwo National Park. For guaranteed viewing, the eagle can be seen in captivity at Kebun Binatang Bandung zoo. Given that fewer than 325 pairs remain in the wild, patience and expert local guidance are essential for any field encounter.
