Mandarin Duck
Identification
The mandarin duck is a small perching duck, measuring 41–49 cm long with a wingspan of 65–75 cm. It is closely related to the North American wood duck, and together these are the only members of the genus Aix. The species is strikingly sexually dimorphic, with males displaying extraordinary plumage that has captivated observers since the species was first described in Europe in the 18th century.
The adult male is unmistakable, featuring a small red bill, a large white crescent above the eye, and a reddish face with distinctive "whiskers". The breast is deep purple with two vertical white bars, the flanks are ruddy, and most notably, the male displays two striking orange "sail" feathers at the back—modified secondary flight feathers that project upward like boat sails. Both sexes sport crests, though the male's purple crest is more pronounced. Females are far more subdued, with greyish-brown plumage, a slender white eye-ring and stripe extending back from the eye, pale underside coloring, a small white flank stripe, and a pale-tipped bill. After breeding season, males molt into eclipse plumage resembling females, but retain a bright yellow-orange or red beak and lack a pronounced eye-stripe, allowing identification.
Range & Habitat
The mandarin duck is native to East and Northeast Asia, though it was once widespread throughout the region. By the 1980s, populations had declined dramatically due to large-scale exports and forest habitat destruction, falling below 1,000 pairs in both eastern Russia and China. Japan retained a more robust population of around 5,000 pairs. A 2009 survey indicated recovery in China, estimating 12,000–14,000 birds. Wild Asian populations are migratory, overwintering in lowland eastern China and southern Japan. The species is now protected in China.
Outside its native range, introduced populations are thriving, particularly in Britain where approximately 7,000 birds now live, establishing themselves in the 20th century from escaped collection specimens. Smaller breeding populations have appeared in Ireland, concentrated in Dublin's parks. Additional populations exist on the European continent, with the largest concentration near Berlin, and isolated populations occur in the United States, including in North Carolina. Notably, the mandarin duck occupies a distinct ecological niche in introduced ranges and does not compete with native waterfowl, though its expanding range may eventually bring it into competition with tree-nesting species like the common goldeneye.
Behaviour & Diet
As a perching duck, the mandarin duck exhibits behavior distinct from dabbling ducks, showing a preference for woodland habitats near water. The species is monotypic with no recognized subspecies. The mandarin duck's unusual genetic makeup—84 acrocentric chromosomes compared to the 80 found in other duck species—makes successful hybridization with other ducks extremely difficult, though some hybrids with six other duck species have been reported without definitive verification.
Best Time & Places to See It
In its native Asian range, the mandarin duck can be observed in lowland areas of eastern China and southern Japan during winter months when migratory populations congregate. In introduced ranges, Britain offers the most accessible viewing opportunities, with approximately 7,000 birds now established throughout the country. Dublin's parks in Ireland provide reliable sightings of breeding populations. For those visiting mainland Europe, the Berlin region hosts the largest introduced population outside the British Isles.
Photography Tips
The male mandarin duck's elaborate coloration makes it one of the most photogenic of all waterfowl, particularly during breeding season when full plumage is displayed. The striking orange sail feathers, purple breast, and distinctive facial markings offer excellent compositional opportunities. Photographing birds in their natural woodland habitat near water will provide the most authentic field-guide images. Be aware that males in eclipse plumage (post-breeding season) will appear far less colorful and more similar to females, so timing your visit accordingly will maximize the impact of your images.
