The Marico sunbird is a small passerine belonging to the family Nectariniidae. As with many sunbird species, males are typically more brightly coloured than females, though specific plumage details are not extensively documented in available field sources. Range & Habitat

The Marico sunbird is native to woodlands of the eastern and southern Afrotropics, with its range spanning much of southeastern Africa. It occurs across Angola, Botswana, Burundi, Eritrea, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Kenya, Mozambique, Namibia, Rwanda, Somalia, South Africa, South Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. The species has shown significant range expansion in recent years, moving southward into the Northern Cape and Free State provinces of central South Africa—a shift potentially driven by severe drought conditions affecting western and central regions since 2014. Remarkably, the species is expanding into drier, more arid areas with fewer trees than typical woodland habitats, suggesting considerable physiological flexibility.

Behaviour & Diet

Like other sunbirds, the Marico sunbird follows natural flight corridors through landscapes such as rivers and valleys, which provide both a guided flight path and abundant foraging opportunities. The species also benefits from landscaped areas in towns and suburbs, which can serve as secondary habitats for migrants. In Eswatini savannas, shrub encroachment has created additional suitable habitat, allowing populations to increase. The species is considered a local migrant in some areas, such as the Kutse Game Reserve, where it is uncommon during the October to March period.

The Marico sunbird occurs across a vast range spanning much of southeastern Africa. Key locations include protected areas such as the Kutse Game Reserve in Botswana, though the species is best sought during the April to September months when it is most regularly present. Recent range expansions mean that sightings are increasingly possible in the Northern Cape and Free State provinces of South Africa, areas previously outside the species' known distribution.
