Masked Trogon

Identification

The masked trogon is a mid-sized trogon measuring 27 cm in length. Males display striking plumage that varies by subspecies: the upperparts, head, and upper chest are variously glossy green, reddish-bronze, or golden-green. The belly and lower breast are bright red, separated from the greenish upper chest by a narrow white band. A distinctive red eye-ring (occasionally orange in tepui subspecies) is characteristic of males. Females are more subdued, with brown upperparts and pinkish-to-red underparts; they possess a partial white eye-ring and a narrow or obscured white band on the chest.

Range & Habitat

The masked trogon is a resident species found throughout the highland regions of northwestern South America, occurring in Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, and Venezuela. Eight recognized subspecies occupy distinct geographic and ecological niches, from the subtropical west Andean slope to high-altitude tepui plateaus and the temperate Andes. The species is fairly common in humid highland forests, making it a characteristic bird of montane ecosystems throughout its range.

Behaviour & Diet

Like all trogons, the masked trogon feeds primarily on fruits and insects, gleaning its food from the forest canopy and mid-story levels. The species nests in cavities that it excavates in the soft wood of rotting vertical tree trunks, a typical breeding strategy among trogons. This cavity-nesting behavior ties the species to mature or deceased trees in its highland forest habitat.

The masked trogon's year-round residency means it can be encountered throughout the year in appropriate habitat. The species is fairly common in humid highland forests across the Andes and tepui regions. Birders and nature travelers should focus on montane forest areas at suitable elevations in Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Guyana, and Brazil where highland forest habitat is preserved. The varied subspecies distributions mean that different regions will offer subtly different male plumage variations.
