Monk Parakeet

Identification

The monk parakeet is a small to medium-sized parrot averaging 29 cm in length with a 48-centimetre wingspan. Its most distinctive features are its bright-green upperparts contrasting with a pale grey forehead and breast, adorned with darker scalloping. The underparts transition from grey to very light-green or yellow, while the remiges are dark blue and the tail is long and tapering. The bill is orange. Females tend to be 10–20% smaller than males, though reliable sexing requires DNA or feather testing, as sexual dimorphism in crown and wing-covert colouration is too subtle for the human eye to discern.

The monk parakeet's loud, distinctive call—a throaty "chape-yee" or "quak quaki quak-wi quarr"—makes it unmistakable in the field. Domestic colour variants exist in white, blue, and yellow, but wild-type birds retain their natural green plumage, which provides superior camouflage.

Range & Habitat

The monk parakeet originates from the temperate to subtropical areas of South America, with three recognized subspecies occupying different regions. The nominate subspecies is found in Argentina and Uruguay from southeastern Santiago del Estero Province throughout the Río Salado and lower Paraná basins to Buenos Aires Province. The calita subspecies inhabits the Andean foothills up to 1,000 metres elevation, from southeastern Bolivia through Paraguay and northwestern Argentina. The cotorra subspecies occurs in southwestern Brazil throughout the Río Paraguay and middle Paraná basins and the Gran Chaco.

Beyond their native range, self-sustaining feral populations have established themselves in many places worldwide, primarily in areas of similar climate in North America and Europe, making the species increasingly accessible to travellers across multiple continents.

Behaviour & Diet

The monk parakeet is a gregarious species with remarkable nesting behaviour—it is one of only two parrot species outside some African lovebirds that construct nests, and the only one that builds large, external nests in trees or on manmade structures rather than using tree cavities. Breeding often occurs colonially, with pairs building separate "apartments" within composite nests that can reach the size of a small automobile, accommodating multiple breeding units within a single structure.

Monk parakeets are remarkably social breeders; about 20% of breeding units comprise three to five birds, which may be related or unrelated individuals. Females lay 1–11 white eggs and incubate them continuously while males provide food. These large communal nests attract diverse tenants, including pigeons, sparrows, American kestrels, yellow-billed teal, and even mammals such as red squirrels, creating unique multi-species living arrangements.

Best Time & Places to See It

The monk parakeet's average lifespan of approximately 15 years allows for reliable repeat sightings in established populations. For observing native populations, South America remains essential, particularly in Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay where the species occurs naturally. However, established feral populations in North America and Europe offer increasingly convenient opportunities for northern-hemisphere travellers to encounter this species.

The most rewarding viewing occurs near their distinctive large stick nests, which are visible year-round in trees and on structures, making them reliable landmarks for locating active birds and their colonies.

The bright-green plumage and contrasting pale breast make monk parakeets visually striking subjects. Their gregarious nature and colonial nesting behaviour mean photographers often have opportunities to capture multiple birds in a single frame. The large, distinctive communal nests provide excellent compositional elements and context for photographs, distinguishing monk parakeets from other parrot species.

The species' loud, distinctive calls make them easy to locate in their habitat, and their colonial structure means patient photographers can position themselves near nest sites for consistent access to active birds. Their relatively calm demeanour compared to some parrot species, particularly in established feral populations, often allows for closer approach and detailed photography of plumage details and facial features.
