Northern Gannet

Identification

The Northern Gannet is the largest seabird in the northern Atlantic, measuring 87–100 cm in length with an impressive wingspan of 170–180 cm. Adults are unmistakable: predominantly white with a streamlined body, long neck, and long, slender wings edged with dark brown-black feathers. The head and nape display a distinctive buff tinge, particularly prominent during breeding season. A striking blue-grey pointed bill contrasts sharply with black, bare skin encircling the mouth and eyes. The sexes are similar in appearance, making field identification straightforward for adults.

Juveniles present a very different appearance and require patience to identify. Young birds are mostly grey-brown and gradually become whiter over approximately five years as they mature, passing through various plumage stages before attaining full adult coloration. This prolonged maturation means you may encounter birds at many different stages of development in the field.

Range & Habitat

Native to the coasts of the North Atlantic Ocean, the Northern Gannet breeds in Western Europe and Northeastern North America. Breeding colonies are established on both sides of the Atlantic, with the largest concentrations found in Scotland at Bass Rock (75,000 pairs as of 2014), St. Kilda (60,000 pairs as of 2013), and Ailsa Craig (33,000 pairs as of 2014). Significant colonies also exist at Little Skellig in Ireland (35,000 pairs in 2011), Grassholm in Wales, and Bonaventure Island off Quebec (60,000 pairs in 2009). The species' breeding range has been expanding northward and eastward, with colonies now established on Russia's Kola Peninsula (since 1995) and Bear Island in Svalbard (since 2011).

Behaviour & Diet

Northern Gannets are renowned for their spectacular hunting technique. They dive at high speeds up to 60 mph into the sea to catch fish, which form the mainstay of their diet. Gannets breed in large, densely packed colonies where they exhibit surprisingly little fear of humans—a characteristic reflected in the genus name Morus, derived from the Ancient Greek word for "foolish." This lack of wariness historically made them vulnerable to hunting, a practice that still continues in limited areas such as the Outer Hebrides and the Faroe Islands, though the population remains healthy overall.
