The Northern Tropical Pewee is a small tyrant flycatcher, measuring 12 to 14 cm in length and weighing just 8 to 14 grams—smaller than most songbirds. It presents a subtle, understated plumage typical of pewees. The nominate subspecies displays a dark blackish-gray crown with a slight crest, whitish lores, and a thin white eye-ring set against a grayish-olive face. The back is sooty olive-gray, and the rump shows hidden white feather tufts on either side. Two thin, pale wing bars are visible on the wings, and the underparts are predominantly white to yellowish-white. Males and females are identical in plumage. Other subspecies vary slightly in the intensity of gray and olive tones, with some showing paler crowns and breasts, or more prominent yellow on the flanks and lower breast.
Juvenile birds are browner above with buff to cinnamon-buff edges on feathers, and their wing coverts display wider pale tips. The bird's posture is characteristically upright and alert, with a habit of tail-shivering upon landing.
