Identification

The olive-backed pipit is a small passerine roughly sparrow-sized, measuring around 15 cm (5.9 in). Its most distinctive features are its greenish-brown upperparts heavily streaked with darker brown, combined with a well-marked whitish supercilium (eyebrow stripe) that sets it apart from similar species. A double wingbar and whitish outer tail feathers provide additional identifying marks. The underparts are whitish to buff, with dark brown streaking concentrated on the breast and flanks. The sexes are alike in plumage. Though sometimes called the tree pipit owing to a superficial resemblance, the olive-backed pipit's back is noticeably more olive-toned and less heavily streaked, and its head pattern—particularly the prominent supercilium—differs distinctly from that species.

Range & Habitat

The olive-backed pipit breeds across a vast region spanning southern, north-central and eastern Asia, from Himalayan Pakistan and India westward through Nepal into China, where it reaches as far north as Gansu province. The range extends eastward through Korea to Japan and northward through north-central Asia into northeastern European Russia. It is a long-distance migrant, vacating breeding areas in winter to occupy a broad southern Asian region from peninsular India eastward through Southeast Asia and the Philippines. The species occasionally appears as a rare vagrant in western Europe.

During the breeding season, it favours groves and wooded biotopes, ascending to elevations of up to 4,500 m (14,800 ft) in eastern Nepal. In winter, it prefers evergreen woodland, consistently selecting open country habitats year-round.

Behaviour & Diet

The olive-backed pipit is typically encountered singly or in pairs. On the ground, it runs actively in search of food, flushing into trees when disturbed. Its flight is characteristically jerky and undulating. The bird's song is lark-like and delivered on the wing, resembling that of the tree pipit but notably faster and higher-pitched. Its call consists of a single tseep or spek, also similar to the tree pipit's vocalizations.

The species is primarily insectivorous but supplements its diet with grass and weed seeds, making it opportunistic in its feeding habits.

Best Time & Places to See It

To encounter olive-backed pipits, visit their breeding range during summer months (May to July) in groves and wooded areas across the Himalayas, central Asia, China, Korea or Japan. Winter visitors should explore evergreen woodlands across peninsular India, Southeast Asia and the Philippines during the cooler months. The species' preference for open country makes it relatively conspicuous in suitable habitat, though patient observation is often required.
