Plain-breasted Ground Dove

Identification

The plain-breasted ground dove is a tiny pigeon, measuring just 14.5–16 cm in length and weighing only 24–42 grams, making it one of the smallest members of the dove family. Its plumage is dark grey to brown with somewhat paler wings marked by dark violet spots, while the underwings are predominantly rufous. The bird has a distinctive grey bill, pink legs, and reddish eyes. While subtle differences exist between males and females, the most reliable identification feature is the bird's plain breast, which distinguishes it from the similar common ground dove—which has a distinctly speckled head and neck—and the duller ruddy ground dove.

Range & Habitat

This widespread but discontinuous species ranges across much of Central and South America, from Mexico through Central America and into South America, including northeastern Argentina. It is found in countries from Belize and Guatemala to Brazil, the Guianas, and Peru. The plain-breasted ground dove shows a marked preference for arid climates and is typically encountered in dry savannas, tropical dry shrubland, and seasonally wet lowland grasslands, often in heavily degraded former forest areas. Though most common in lowlands, the species occasionally ranges to foothills and uncommon altitudes up to 2,100 metres above sea level.

Behaviour & Diet

Active during daylight hours with peak activity in mid-morning and afternoon, this ground dove forages in open areas such as grasslands for grain and fruits. Like other pigeons, it possesses the unusual ability to drink through suction rather than collecting water in its mouth and tilting its head back. The species is monogamous and territorial, with males performing a striking courtship display that involves tilting the head while calling with a visibly inflated crop that expands the neck and chest regions. Ground nesters by preference, they occasionally nest in trees using smaller nests, laying one to two white eggs approximately 21.5 mm by 16.3 mm. Parents share brooding duties, with males caring for eggs during the day and females at night, subsequently feeding young with crop milk before continued parental feeding after fledging.

Best Time & Places to See It

The plain-breasted ground dove is resident throughout its range and does not migrate, making it potentially viewable year-round in suitable habitat. Look for this species in open grasslands and dry shrubland areas across its broad Central and South American range. Its preference for arid environments and degraded habitats means it may be found in surprisingly open, disturbed areas rather than pristine forest. Early morning and afternoon hours offer the best viewing opportunities when the bird's activity peaks.

Photography Tips

The plain-breasted ground dove's tiny size and ground-foraging behaviour require patience and low angles for effective photography. Since the bird typically feeds in open grasslands, approach slowly and remain low to avoid alarming it. The reddish eyes, violet spots on the wings, and rufous underwings provide good identification features for photographs. Early morning and afternoon light will best showcase the subtle but beautiful plumage coloration. Watch for the male's impressive courtship display with inflated crop if you encounter a territorial pair.
