Rattling Cisticola

Identification

The Rattling Cisticola is a small passerine in the family Cisticolidae, native to Africa. Like many cisticolas, it is a compact bird with subtle plumage, though specific visual details of size and coloration are best observed in the field. The species is perhaps most reliably identified by its distinctive and strident call, which can be rendered as "chee-chee chichi-chirrrrr," though individual birds vary somewhat in their vocalizations. Its behavior—perching prominently while calling—also aids identification.

Range & Habitat

The Rattling Cisticola is distributed widely across sub-Saharan Africa, occurring in Angola, Botswana, Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Somalia, South Africa, South Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. Seventeen recognized subspecies reflect this broad geographic range.

This species is a common to abundant resident of open savanna and scrubland habitats across arid, moist, and upland regions. It favors thorn-dominated savannas and woodlands, and is frequently encountered in miombo and mopane woodland. It is among the commonest bird species on the Mozambican coastal plain and inhabits the Eastern Highlands and East African uplands below 2,000 meters. The species also utilizes ecotones including woodland edges, cultivation fringes, and woodland bordering the Okavango delta. It often co-occurs with various Prinia species.

Behaviour & Diet

The Rattling Cisticola is highly conspicuous, especially during the summer months when it spends considerable time calling prominently from the tops of trees and bushes. Its loud, repetitive call is one of its most recognizable features. Breeding occurs during the wet season in spring and summer, when pairs construct distinctive ball-shaped nests woven from coarse grass blades and lined internally with fine plant material.

Summer is the optimal season for encountering this species, as birds are most vocal and conspicuous during breeding season. Look for it in open savanna, scrubland, and thorn-woodland habitats across its wide African range.
