Red-backed Fairywren

Identification

The red-backed fairywren is a small, striking passerine with pronounced sexual dimorphism. Breeding males display a bold plumage pattern: glossy black head, upperparts and tail contrasted against a brightly coloured red back and brown wings. Females are more subdued, with brownish upperparts and paler underparts. Males in eclipse (non-breeding) plumage resemble females, as do juveniles. Two subspecies are recognised across the species' range: the nominate M. m. melanocephalus of eastern Australia features a longer tail and orange back, while the short-tailed M. m. cruentatus from northern Australia displays a deeper red coloration on the back.

Range & Habitat

Endemic to Australia, the red-backed fairywren is distributed along the northern and eastern coastlines from the Kimberley in the northwest to the Hunter Region in New South Wales. It shows a strong preference for heathland and savannah, particularly in areas where low shrubs and tall grasses provide adequate cover. The species is typically found near rivers and coastal areas, though it can be nomadic in regions experiencing frequent bushfires.

Behaviour & Diet

The red-backed fairywren feeds primarily on insects, supplementing its diet with seeds and small fruits. It exhibits complex social behaviour, living in groups consisting of a socially monogamous pair with one or more helper birds who assist in raising young. These helpers are typically sexually mature offspring that remain with the family group for one or more years after fledging. Notably, the species is sexually promiscuous—both partners may mate with other individuals and even help raise resulting young from such pairings. Older males in full breeding plumage are more likely to engage in this behaviour than those in eclipse plumage. Pairs or small groups maintain and defend territories year-round in stable parts of the range. As part of courtship, males pluck red flower petals and display them to females.

Best Time & Places to See It

Look for this species in heathland and savannah habitats along the northern and eastern Australian coasts. It can be found from the Kimberley region through northern Queensland and down the eastern coast to the Hunter Region in New South Wales. Breeding males in their striking black and red plumage are most conspicuous during breeding season when they are actively displaying and defending territories.

Photography Tips

The striking contrast between the male's black head and upperparts and the red back provides excellent photographic opportunity in good light. The small size and preference for cover in low shrubs and grasses means patience and careful stalking are required. Early morning when males are most active and vocal will yield the best chances. Focus on capturing the distinctive courtship behaviour, including the characteristic red petal display, for compelling images that illustrate this species' unique breeding biology.
