Red-crested Korhaan

Identification

The red-crested korhaan is a compact bustard, growing up to 50 cm in length and weighing a maximum of 680 g. Sexual dimorphism is pronounced in this species. Males display a distinctive gray-blue head with reddish feathers on the nape that rise to form a crest during courtship displays, while females and immatures have brown head feathers instead. Both sexes show striking wing patterns: V-shaped markings in light cream with white at the sides when wings are folded on the back. The breast is black, with pale yellow legs and gray feet completing the plumage.

Range & Habitat

The red-crested korhaan is found across southern Africa, occurring in Angola, Botswana, Eswatini, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. This is a sedentary species rather than a migratory one, remaining within its established range year-round. It inhabits diverse environments including dry savanna, bushveld, and thorny scrubland, though it can also be found in wet woodland areas, showing considerable habitat flexibility across its distribution.

Behaviour & Diet

The red-crested korhaan is perhaps most famous for its extraordinary courtship display. Males attract females by flying high into the air and then dropping down dramatically, a behavior so striking that the species has earned the nickname "suicide bird." Females assess male fitness by selecting partners who descend closest to the ground without injury, making this a genuine test of skill and courage. The species produces a very distinct call that is characteristic and recognizable across its range.
