Red-footed Falcon

Identification

The red-footed falcon is a medium-small, long-winged bird of prey measuring 28–34 cm in length with a wingspan of 65–75 cm and an average mass of 155 g. The species is sexually dimorphic and readily identifiable in the field. Adult males are striking blue-grey overall, with distinctive red undertail coverts and red legs; their underwings are uniformly grey. Females are noticeably different, featuring a grey back and wings contrasted with an orange head and underparts, a white face marked by a black eye stripe and prominent black moustaches. Young birds are brown above and buff below with dark streaks, and their face pattern resembles that of females.

Range & Habitat

The red-footed falcon is found across eastern Europe and Asia, with main breeding concentrations in southern Russia and Ukraine. Large populations occur in Hungary, Romania, and Serbia, with smaller numbers in Italy, Bulgaria, Moldova, Austria, Slovakia, and Belarus. The species breeds irregularly in the Czech Republic and Baltic States, and occasionally in Germany, with records extending as far west as Ireland. In Asia, the breeding range runs in a narrow band south of the taiga eastwards to the upper Lena River. The northern breeding border lies between 63° and 58° north latitude, while the southern border is around 45° north latitude. Some isolated breeding areas exist in northern Turkey. This migratory species winters in southern and eastern Africa.

Behaviour & Diet

Red-footed falcons are colonial breeders that do not construct their own nests, instead reusing old nests of corvids such as rooks and magpies. They lay two to four eggs per clutch. The species exhibits strong territorial behavior and elaborate courtship displays, including frequent copulation and joint nest inspections. Males provision females with large insects during breeding season. These falcons have a maximum lifespan of 13.25 years in the wild and 18 years in captivity.

The red-footed falcon is best observed during the breeding season in its core range of southern Russia, Ukraine, Hungary, Romania, and Serbia. The species is migratory, making it a regular wanderer to western Europe during passage periods. Though primarily an Old World species, a remarkable sighting occurred on Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts in August 2004, representing the first confirmed North American record. Travellers seeking this species should note that its populations are dwindling rapidly due to habitat loss and hunting.
