Red-necked Spurfowl

Identification

The red-necked spurfowl is a medium-sized gamebird measuring 25–38 cm in length, though size varies considerably between subspecies. It is a generally dark bird, with brown plumage on the upperparts and black-streaked grey or white underparts. The most distinctive features are its bright red bill, bare facial skin, neck, and legs, which make it unmistakable in the field.

Range & habitat

This resident species occurs across central and eastern Africa, with populations below the Congo Basin spanning Angola, southern Gabon, the southern Democratic Republic of the Congo, and extending eastward through Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, southern Kenya and Tanzania. Its distribution continues down the eastern side of Southern Africa, though it is absent from most of Namibia, Botswana, and the western parts of South Africa. Four subspecies are now recognized, each occupying distinct regional ranges across this broad distribution.

The red-necked spurfowl favours deep cover habitat but will sometimes venture into open scrub or cultivation areas, provided that suitable thickets remain nearby for refuge. It is a wary species that relies on proximity to protective vegetation.

Behaviour & diet

As a wary gamebird, the red-necked spurfowl typically remains concealed in dense vegetation, though it may be drawn to open areas for feeding when disturbance is minimal and adequate cover is accessible. The species is a ground nester, with females laying three to nine eggs in simple bare scrapes on the ground. Despite its secretive nature, the species is widespread and common throughout its large range and is evaluated as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List.

The red-necked spurfowl is a resident species across its range, meaning birds are present year-round and can be sought throughout the seasons. Your best opportunities lie in suitable habitats within Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Zambia, and the eastern regions of South Africa. Look for birds in areas offering a mix of dense scrub and thickets adjacent to more open ground. Early morning hours are often productive for gamebird spotting.

Photography tips

The red-necked spurfowl's wary nature and preference for dense cover make it a challenging photographic subject. Patience and careful stalking through suitable habitat will be necessary. The bird's distinctive red facial and neck markings provide excellent focal points when you do obtain views. Approach slowly and quietly along thicket edges where birds are likely to feed.
