The Sahul cicadabird is a member of the cuckooshrike family, characterized by its slender bill—a feature reflected in its scientific name, Edolisoma tenuirostre. As a passerine bird, it belongs to the perching bird order and shares the typical body structure and behavior patterns of songbirds. This species was previously known as the common cicadabird or slender-billed cicadabird before taxonomic revision clarified its classification and range.

The Sahul cicadabird is found across a vast region spanning Australia, New Guinea, and the Bismarck Archipelago. Six recognized subspecies are distributed throughout this range, from the Raja Ampat Islands and Aru Islands in the west, across New Guinea and various island groups, to northeastern Western Australia, Cape York Peninsula, and southeastern Australia. This wide distribution reflects the species' remarkable capacity for dispersal and adaptation.
The bird inhabits temperate forests and subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests. These wooded environments provide the dense vegetation and food sources necessary for this forest-dwelling species to thrive across its diverse geographic range.
