It is found in Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda. It is monotypic in the genus Pholia. The common name and Latin binomial name commemorate the British zoologist Richard Bowdler Sharpe.
