Summer Tanager

Identification

The summer tanager is a medium-sized American songbird measuring 17 cm (6.7 in) in length with a wingspan of 28–30 cm. These birds are characterized by their stout, pointed bills and distinctive plumage that differs markedly between sexes. Adult males are a striking rose red overall, while females display orangish underparts contrasted with olive-green upperparts and olive-brown wings and tail. The striking red and orange coloration is acquired through diet. Males may be confused with the similar hepatic tanager, though that species has a noticeably darker bill.

The summer tanager's vocalizations are distinctive: their song resembles that of an American robin with melodic units repeated in a constant stream, though it is considerably more monotonous than the robin's, often containing only three or four distinct units. The song is clearer and less nasal than that of the scarlet tanager. A sharp, agitated-sounding call—pi-tuk or pik-i-tuk-i-tuk—is also characteristic.

Range & Habitat

Summer tanagers breed across the southern United States and Northern Mexico, with their range extending as far north as Iowa and New Jersey in the east. They are highly migratory, overwintering in Mexico, Central America, and northern South America. The species is an extremely rare vagrant to western Europe.

Regional habitat preferences vary considerably. In the southeastern United States, they favor pine-oak and mixed forests, while in the southwest they prefer riparian lowlands. These adaptable birds may forage in human-altered habitats during migration and winter, making them accessible to birdwatchers in diverse settings.

Behaviour & Diet

Summer tanagers are primarily insectivores, often foraging high in the canopy where they may sally out to catch insects in flight, frequently remaining out of sight among the foliage. They regularly supplement their diet with fruit, particularly favoring the fruit of Cymbopetalum mayanum in their winter quarters. They have also been documented eating larger invertebrate prey including snails and slugs, and there is one report of an individual attempting to consume a green anole lizard at a migratory stopover in Mississippi.

These birds are cup-nest builders, constructing their nests on horizontal tree branches anywhere from 4–45 feet above the ground, providing flexibility in nest placement across varied habitat types.

Best Time & Places to See It

Summer tanagers are best observed during the breeding season from spring through early summer across their range in the southern United States and Northern Mexico. Southeastern pine-oak forests and southwestern riparian lowlands offer the most reliable viewing opportunities. Birds may also be attracted to residential areas, particularly where Cymbopetalum mayayan trees are planted or near bird feeders.

Photography Tips

The brilliant rose-red plumage of breeding males provides excellent photographic subjects against green foliage. However, these birds often forage high in trees, requiring patience and a telephoto lens. Early morning when birds are most vocal and active offers the best light and opportunities. The striking color contrast between males and the more subtle olive and orange tones of females provides diverse compositional possibilities for wildlife photographers.
