Wedge-billed Woodcreeper

Identification

The wedge-billed woodcreeper is the smallest member of its family, measuring just 13–16 cm long and weighing 10.5–21 g. Its most distinctive feature is its short, upturned, wedge-shaped bill—unique among woodcreepers and resembling those of Xenops species. The nominate subspecies displays a rich russet-brown crown and nape, grayish forehead, buff supercilium, and buff eyering. Its upperparts are warm brown to russet-brown, while the lower back and tail are cinnamon-rufous. The underparts are olive-brown with characteristic large round fulvous spots on the upper breast and narrow streaks below. In flight, a buff-white stripe along the underwing coverts creates a distinctive pale band. The sexes are identical. Thirteen subspecies exist, differing subtly in plumage tone—some darker and more olivaceous, others paler and buffier—and in vocal characteristics, suggesting this may represent multiple species.
