Identification

The White-browed Coucal is a medium-sized cuckoo measuring 36 to 42 cm in length. Adults are unmistakable, bearing a blackish crown and nape contrasting sharply with a distinctive white supercilium (eyebrow stripe) that gives the species its name. The back is rufous-brown, while the wings are chestnut and the rump and tail are blackish, with the tail glossed in green and tipped with white. The underparts are creamy-white, and the bird has striking red eyes, a black beak, and greyish-black to black legs and feet. The sexes are similar in appearance. Juveniles are more subtle, showing rufous streaking on the crown, a fainter buff supercilium, barred upper parts, and darker underparts, making them less distinctive than adults.

Range & Habitat

This species is native to sub-Saharan Africa and the southwestern Arabian Peninsula. Its extensive range spans eastern and southern Africa, including Angola, Botswana, Burundi, Congo, Democratic Republic of Congo, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Namibia, Rwanda, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe, as well as Saudi Arabia and Yemen in Asia.

The White-browed Coucal favours habitats with thick cover, preferring areas of rank undergrowth and scrub vegetation. It also inhabits suitable coastal regions where dense vegetation provides adequate shelter. This preference for well-vegetated terrain makes it a bird of dense, bushy landscapes rather than open ground.
