White-cheeked Honeyeater

Identification

The white-cheeked honeyeater is a medium-sized honeyeater, 16–20 cm in length, with striking black and white plumage that makes it unmistakable in the field. Its most distinctive feature is a large, conspicuous white cheek-patch set against a mainly black head. The bird also displays a long, tapering white brow-line and dark brown eyes. Bright yellow panels on the wings and tail provide striking colour contrast, particularly visible in flight. The bill is long, sturdy, and distinctly curved downwards—an adaptation for probing flowers. Young birds appear duller, with yellowish rather than white facial markings. In flight, the species is swift and erratic, and notably vocal and active.

The white-cheeked honeyeater is most likely to be confused with the very similar New Holland honeyeater, which shares its size, shape and black-and-white coloration. However, the New Holland honeyeater has a distinctive white eye, whereas the white-cheeked has a dark brown eye. Other black and white honeyeaters in the region are considerably smaller and pose no identification challenge.
