Identification

The white-chinned petrel is a large, sooty-black seabird measuring 51–58 cm in length with a wingspan of 134–147 cm, making it the largest species in the Procellaria genus and among the largest in its family outside the giant petrels. Males are noticeably heavier than females, averaging 1,390 g compared to 1,280 g. The species is characterized by distinctive white patches on its throat and chin—more prominent in Indian Ocean populations than Atlantic ones—and silvery-tinged underwing primaries. Its bill is horn or yellow-coloured with black markings between the nostrils, and it has black legs and feet. In flight, white-chinned petrels display a characteristic pattern of slow wingbeats interspersed with glides.

Range & Habitat

This petrel ranges throughout the Southern Ocean, breeding colonially on scattered subantarctic and temperate islands including South Georgia (hosting approximately 2 million pairs), the Kerguelen Islands (175,000–226,000 pairs), Disappointment Island (100,000 pairs), and smaller populations on the Crozet Islands, Prince Edward Islands, Campbell Islands, Auckland Islands, Antipodes Islands, and Falkland Islands. Two subspecies are recognized: P. a. aequinoctialis breeds in the South Atlantic and South Indian Oceans, while P. a. steadi breeds on New Zealand's subantarctic islands. During the non-breeding season, birds disperse from Antarctic pack ice northward to subtropical waters, with vagrant records occasionally appearing in the North Atlantic.

Behaviour & Diet

White-chinned petrels are highly social breeders in which both sexes collaborate to construct nests, incubate eggs, and provision chicks. They feed primarily on krill supplemented by fish, obtaining food through surface-seizing and shallow dives. The species readily follows fishing vessels to scavenge discards, a behaviour that unfortunately makes them particularly vulnerable to longline fishery bycatch. Though generally quiet at sea, they produce rattling and groaning calls at breeding colonies.

South Georgia is the premier destination for observing white-chinned petrels, supporting the world's largest breeding population. The breeding season offers the best opportunity to encounter this species at colonies on South Georgia, the Kerguelen Islands, and the Prince Edward Islands, where birds are present and vocal. During non-breeding months, birds disperse widely across Southern Ocean waters; pelagic seabird cruises and research vessels operating in subantarctic regions offer excellent chances for sightings at sea.

Photography Tips

The white-chinned petrel's dark plumage demands exposure compensation and careful metering to capture detail in shadows while preserving highlights. Photograph birds in flight to showcase the silvery underwing pattern and characteristic slow-flap-glide flight style—a fast shutter speed of at least 1/2000s is essential for sharp action shots. At breeding colonies, use longer lenses to observe nest-building and pair interactions without disturbance. Overcast Southern Ocean conditions are typical; shoot in RAW format to maximize post-processing flexibility, and focus on the pale chin patch as a key identification feature when documenting individuals.
