White-crested Guan
Identification
The white-crested guan is a large bird, growing to approximately 80 centimetres in length. Its most distinctive feature is the prominent crest of white feathers on its head, which gives the species its name. The bird's plumage is striking: black upper parts with an iridescent green gloss, contrasting sharply with dark reddish-brown underparts. It has bluish cheeks and a long black tail. In flight or at rest, the white crest is immediately recognisable and makes this species relatively straightforward to identify within its range. The voice is equally characteristic—a raucous cackle described as "eh-uh" or a series of "u u u u u" sounds, which may be heard before the bird is seen.
Range & Habitat
The white-crested guan is endemic to Brazil, found exclusively in the eastern Amazon basin. Its range is restricted to the southern riverbank of the Amazon River and extends eastwards along the south bank of the Pará River south of Marajó Island at the Amazon River's outlet. The species also extends slightly into the Cerrado ecoregion across the Rio Araguaia.
This guan inhabits tropical moist lowland forest, preferring dense, solid-ground forest but occasionally venturing into seasonally-flooded areas. The bird is highly dependent on intact forest habitat and shows little tolerance for disturbed or fragmented woodland.
Behaviour & Diet
The white-crested guan is a member of the Cracidae family, which includes other forest-dwelling gamebirds known for their arboreal habits and vocal nature. While specific details of its diet and daily behaviour are limited, members of this family typically forage in trees and on the ground for seeds, fruits, and vegetation. The species' loud, distinctive vocalisations suggest it is relatively vocal, particularly during breeding season or when establishing territories within the forest canopy.
Best Time & Places to See It
The white-crested guan is found only in the eastern Amazon basin of Brazil, making it a species for travellers specifically visiting this region. Within its restricted range along the southern Amazon and Pará river systems, the bird inhabits undisturbed tropical forest. Early morning is typically the best time to encounter guans, as they are most vocal and active during dawn hours. Listening for the characteristic raucous cackle is often more effective than visual searching, given the dense forest habitat and the bird's tendency to remain in the canopy.
Photography Tips
The white-crested guan's striking white crest and contrasting plumage make it a rewarding photographic subject, provided you can locate it in dense forest. Position yourself near fruiting trees at dawn, as guans often visit these areas to feed. The bird's size and dark upper parts against lighter underparts create good contrast for photography. Be patient and use sound as a locating tool—once you hear the distinctive cackle, you can move quietly toward the source. The bluish cheeks and glossy green back deserve close attention, so a telephoto lens will help you capture detail from a distance without disturbing the bird.
