Identification

The white-flanked antwren is a small bird, measuring 9 to 10.5 cm in length and weighing 5 to 10.6 g. It has a distinctively short tail and compact build. Adult males of the nominate subspecies display a dark gray head, neck, back, and rump, with a hidden white patch between the shoulders. Their most distinctive feature—the eponymous white flanks—contrasts sharply with black throat, breast, and belly. The tail is blackish with white tips, and the wings are blackish with white-tipped coverts. Adult females are quite different, with mottled pale olive-brown faces and olive-brown upperparts that become reddish-yellow on the rump. Their white throat and flanks stand out against a rich buff breast and belly. Several subspecies show variation in plumage intensity and coloration, with some males appearing blacker and females either grayer or more rufescent than the nominate form.

Range & Habitat

This species has an extensive range spanning from Honduras through Central America and across much of South America, with five recognized subspecies distributed from the Caribbean slopes of Honduras south through Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama, then across Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela, Peru, Bolivia, Brazil, and the Guianas, with populations also found on Trinidad. It is absent from Argentina, Chile, Paraguay, and Uruguay. The white-flanked antwren inhabits the understorey and mid-storey of humid evergreen forests, including terra firme, várzea, and igapó types, as well as secondary woodland. The species occurs from sea level to approximately 1,100 m elevation, with local populations reaching 1,400 m in some regions, though altitude varies by locality—reaching only 450 m in Honduras but 900 m in Costa Rica and Ecuador.

Behaviour & Diet

The white-flanked antwren is a year-round resident throughout its range. It feeds exclusively on arthropods, primarily insects and spiders, which it gleans methodically from leaves, vine tangles, and branches. The bird forages singly, in pairs, or in family groups, and typically joins mixed-species feeding flocks. Its foraging height ranges between 2 and 12 m above the ground, where it actively searches dense vegetation using gleaning, reaching, lunging, and short sallies from a perch. While the species occasionally follows army ant swarms, these interactions are brief.

Best Time & Places to See It

The white-flanked antwren's breeding season varies across its range but falls within February to December, making most months potentially productive for observation. The species can be found year-round throughout its range. Look for it in humid evergreen forests, both primary and secondary growth, particularly in the understorey and mid-storey levels where it actively forages. Mixed-species feeding flocks are often good indicators of its presence. The species is most reliably found in lowland and foothill forests below 1,100 m, though local populations extend higher.

The species forages in dense vegetation between 2 and 12 m above ground, requiring patience and careful positioning. Males are more distinctive than females, with their dramatic contrast between dark upperparts and white flanks making compelling subjects. Early morning hours often provide the best light in the dim forest understorey. Joining or following mixed-species feeding flocks increases your chances of encounters. A telephoto lens is essential, as this small, active bird works at middle height in thick vegetation. The bird's tendency to forage deliberately through foliage rather than moving rapidly allows photographers time to compose shots, though the dense habitat typically permits only partial views.
