White-tipped Dove

Identification

The white-tipped dove is a large New World tropical dove, measuring about 28 cm (11 in) long and weighing 155 g (5.5 oz). Adults display a distinctive combination of grey and whitish plumage: the crown to nape has a grey tinge, while the forehead and throat are pale grey or whitish. The upperparts and wings are grey-brown, with whitish underparts that shade to pinkish, dull grey, or buff on the chest. The most distinctive feature is the white tail tip, though this is best observed from below or in flight. The bill is black, legs are red, and the iris is yellow. Most birds have a red eye-ring, though those in the Amazon and northern South America typically display a blue eye-ring instead.

The white-tipped dove closely resembles the grey-fronted dove, but can be distinguished by its greyer forehead and crown, which contrast less sharply with the hindcrown. The white-tipped dove usually has a blue eye-ring in areas of overlap, though this distinction is not entirely reliable in parts of Brazil, Argentina, Bolivia, Paraguay, and Uruguay.

Range & Habitat

This species is a resident breeder spanning a vast range from southernmost Texas through Mexico and Central America, extending south to western Peru and central Argentina. It also breeds on offshore islands including Trinidad and Tobago and the Netherlands Antilles. Thirteen recognized subspecies occur throughout this range, reflecting considerable geographic variation.

The white-tipped dove inhabits a variety of woodland settings, preferring scrub, woodland, and forest environments. Unlike many migratory species, these doves remain in their territories year-round, making them accessible to travellers at any season.

Behaviour & Diet

White-tipped doves are typically solitary or found in pairs, and they are notably wary birds. They are non-migratory residents. In flight, they display the fast, direct movement characteristic of pigeons, with regular wingbeats and distinctive clattering sounds. Their deep, hollow call—described as ooo-wooooo—features two notes at the same pitch: an introductory hoot followed by a longer, more audible hollow note. They use their voice for multiple purposes: territorial defence, mate attraction, indicating food resources, predator alerts, and maintaining group contact.

Breeding birds construct large stick nests in trees near ground level, typically laying two white eggs. Incubation lasts about 14 days, with fledging requiring another 15 days. The diet consists mainly of seeds obtained by foraging on the ground, though they also consume insects including butterflies and moths.

Best Time & Places to See It

As year-round residents throughout their range, white-tipped doves can be encountered any time of year. They are most easily found in appropriate habitat from southernmost Texas southward through Mexico, Central America, and into South America to northern Argentina. Woodland and scrubby areas offer the best opportunities for sightings, particularly in early morning or late afternoon when doves are most active.

The white-tipped dove's wariness demands patience and careful approach. Their preference for ground foraging offers opportunities for low-angle shots, while flight photography is rewarding for capturing the distinctive white tail tip. The characteristic clattering wingbeats and fast, direct flight require fast shutter speeds. Early morning light is ideal for photographing the subtle grey and whitish plumage tones.
