White-whiskered Puffbird

Identification

The White-whiskered Puffbird is a small bird, about 18 cm (7.1 inches) long and weighing around 43 grams. It is immediately recognizable by the distinctive white tufts of feathers around its bill—the "whiskers" that give it its name—along with bristles at the base of its large bill. Unlike most puffbirds, males and females show different plumages. Males display brown to chestnut-brown upperparts with buff or tawny streaking on the forecrown and spotting on the back, while females have a grayer crown and more olive-brown upperparts. Both sexes have tawny cheeks and sides of the neck, with the underparts ranging from tawny-buff to buffy white, streaked darker on the breast and flanks. Juveniles resemble females but with heavier streaking below.

Range & Habitat

This puffbird is found from southeastern Mexico through Central America (except El Salvador), into Colombia, Ecuador, and extreme northwestern Peru. Four subspecies occupy different regions: the Caribbean slope from Mexico to western Panama, the Pacific slope from southwestern Costa Rica through Colombia, the Magdalena River valley of Colombia, and the southwestern Colombian through Ecuadorian range. The species favors dense primary evergreen forest but adapts well to secondary forest and field edges. It typically stays low, within 6 meters of the ground, ranging from sea level to 1,200 meters elevation depending on location and slope.

Behaviour & Diet

The White-whiskered Puffbird employs the characteristic puffbird hunting strategy: sitting motionless on a perch before darting out suddenly to snatch large invertebrates and small vertebrates such as frogs and lizards. Prey is brought back to the perch and beaten against it before being swallowed. The species also opportunistically follows army ant swarms and joins mixed-species foraging flocks. During breeding season (mid-March to July in Costa Rica), pairs nest in burrows dug into gently sloping ground, typically 46–56 cm long. The female lays two glossy white eggs, and both parents share incubation duties. The nest chamber is lined with dried leaves. Vocally, it produces a distinctive high-pitched descending trill with an emphasized final note, though it sings less frequently than many other puffbirds.

Best Time & Places to See It

The breeding season from mid-March through July in Costa Rica offers excellent opportunities for observation and photography, as birds are more vocal and active during this period. Focus your search in primary and mature secondary evergreen forests on both Caribbean and Pacific slopes. Early morning hours are typically most productive for locating this species. The bird's preference for staying low in the forest understory makes it more accessible than many other canopy specialists. Costa Rica's Caribbean slope forests and the Pacific slope of southwestern Costa Rica are particularly rewarding locations.

Photography Tips

The White-whiskered Puffbird's small size and preference for remaining low and motionless present both challenges and opportunities for photographers. Use a telephoto lens (at least 300–400mm) to frame this diminutive subject adequately while maintaining distance from the perch. Since the bird spends long periods sitting still before hunting strikes, positioning yourself patiently in suitable habitat increases your chances of sharp, well-composed images. The white facial whiskers and distinctive head pattern are key field marks to emphasize in your photographs. Backlighting can help illuminate the subtle buff and tawny plumage tones. Early morning light is preferable, as the bird hunts most actively then.
