Worm-eating Warbler

Identification

The Worm-eating Warbler is a small warbler, around 13 cm (5.1 in) long and weighing 11.8–17.4 g (0.42–0.61 oz). Its most distinctive feature is the bold black and light brown striping on its head, which contrasts with relatively plain olive-brown upperparts and light underparts. The bird has a slim, pointed bill and pink legs. Immature birds show brownish head stripes rather than black. The male's song is a short, high-pitched trill, while its call is a sharp chip or tseet. Males and females are virtually identical in appearance and can only be reliably distinguished during breeding season by subtle anatomical features.

Observers should note that hatch-year and second-year birds show rusty tips on their tertials that wear away by March, while juveniles display duskier head markings and cinnamon wingbars. These subtle age and plumage differences make this species challenging to age accurately in the field.

Range & Habitat

Worm-eating Warblers breed across the Eastern United States, with populations showing considerable variation in habitat selection. Inland populations typically favor mature hardwood forests on steep slopes, while coastal populations historically preferred pocosins but have increasingly shifted to pine plantations. This habitat flexibility suggests the species is more closely associated with dense shrubby midstory and understory structure than with specific forest types or age. Recent work on coastal breeding populations is revealing how these birds differ ecologically from their inland counterparts.

During winter, these warblers migrate to southern Mexico, the Greater Antilles, and Central America, particularly along the Caribbean Slope, where they occupy both scrub and moist forests. Their ability to thrive in diverse ecosystems—both breeding and wintering habitats—provides some resilience against habitat loss, though they have disappeared from parts of their historical range.

Behaviour & Diet

Worm-eating Warblers breed in dense deciduous forests, typically on wooded slopes. They are ground nesters, placing open-cup nests among dead leaves on the forest floor. Females lay four or five eggs, and both parents participate in feeding the young. When predators threaten the nest, parents may perform injury-feigning displays to distract them. These birds are frequently parasitized by Brown-headed Cowbirds where forest fragmentation occurs, a conservation concern that highlights the importance of maintaining intact forest habitat.

On their breeding grounds, Worm-eating Warblers glean arthropods primarily from live foliage, but on their wintering grounds they shift to gleaning insects almost exclusively from dead plant material. Despite their name, they consume numerous Lepidopteran larvae but rarely eat earthworms. Wide-scale pesticide application poses a significant threat, as it directly reduces their primary food source and may cause long-term toxicity in this insectivorous species.
