Yellow-billed Duck

Identification

The yellow-billed duck is a mallard-sized dabbling duck measuring 51–58 cm in length. These mainly grey birds are characterized by their darker head and strikingly bright yellow bill, which provides their common name. The wings display whitish underwings, and from above reveal a white-bordered green speculum. Sexes are similar in appearance, with juveniles slightly duller than adults. The north-eastern race is noticeably darker with a brighter bill and blue speculum, distinguishing it from the southern subspecies.

Range & Habitat

The yellow-billed duck is an abundant resident breeder in southern and eastern Africa. Unlike many waterfowl, this species is not migratory but wanders during the dry season in search of suitable waters. It inhabits freshwater habitats in fairly open country, and is occasionally found in suburban areas near golf courses, parks, and lakes or dams. The species nests on the ground in dense vegetation close to water.

Behaviour & Diet

Yellow-billed ducks are highly gregarious outside the breeding season, forming large flocks. They feed by dabbling for plant food, primarily in the evening or at night. Males produce a distinctive teal-like whistle, while females emit a mallard-like quack. The species demonstrates elaborate courtship displays—notably, yellow-billed ducks perform all seven major courtship displays documented in African ducks, likely compensating for their lack of sexual dimorphism and relatively bland plumage. Clutches typically contain between six and twelve eggs.

Yellow-billed ducks are abundant residents throughout southern and eastern Africa, making them relatively easy to locate year-round in suitable habitats. The best opportunities occur outside the breeding season when birds gather in large, conspicuous flocks at freshwater bodies. During the dry season, concentrations of birds congregate at remaining water sources, increasing sighting chances. Look for them in open country habitats near lakes, dams, and other freshwater areas, particularly during evening and night hours when they are most active.

Photographers should focus on the bird's distinctive bright yellow bill and grey plumage, which provide excellent contrast for clean images. The white-bordered green speculum on the wings is particularly striking in flight photography. Early morning and evening light will enhance the subtle grey tones of the plumage and make the yellow bill luminous. Since these ducks feed primarily during evening and night hours, plan sessions accordingly. The birds' gregarious nature outside breeding season offers opportunities to capture flock behavior and courtship displays, with males' elaborate posturing providing dynamic compositional possibilities.
