Yellow-billed Oxpecker

Identification

The yellow-billed oxpecker is a compact passerine measuring 20 cm in length. It displays plain brown upperparts and head contrasting with buff underparts and a distinctive pale rump. Adults are characterized by strong feet and a striking bill that is yellow at the base and red at the tip—a feature that immediately distinguishes them from their red-billed relatives. Juveniles lack this distinctive coloration, instead sporting brown bills. The species is a strong, direct flier, and its presence is often announced by a distinctive hissy, crackling call: krisss, krisss.

Range & Habitat

Native to the savannahs of Sub-Saharan Africa, the yellow-billed oxpecker ranges from Senegal in the west eastward to Sudan. Two subspecies are recognized: B. a. africanus, which spans from Mauritania and Senegal to northwest Ethiopia and south to northeast South Africa, and B. a. langi, found in the Congo Basin and Angola. The species is least common in the extreme east of its range, where it overlaps with the red-billed oxpecker, though it consistently dominates that species at feeding sites.

Behaviour & Diet

The yellow-billed oxpecker is perhaps best known for its mutualistic relationship with large mammals. It nests in tree holes lined with hair plucked from livestock and typically lays 2–3 eggs. Outside the breeding season, it forms large, chattering flocks and roosts on host animals at night. The species feeds primarily on insects and ticks parasitizing cattle, wild ungulates, and antelopes such as wildebeest. An adult will consume more than 100 engorged female ticks or 13,000 larvae in a single day. However, blood is their preferred food, and they will peck at wounds on their host mammals to encourage bleeding, feeding directly on the blood flow. Despite this behavior, mammals generally tolerate these energetic birds.

Best Time & Places to See It

Look for yellow-billed oxpeckers wherever large herbivores congregate across Sub-Saharan African savannahs. They are most reliably observed during the dry season when wildlife congregates around water sources and grasslands. Scan cattle herds and mixed ungulate groups in open savannah habitats from Senegal eastward through the Sahel, East Africa, and southern Africa.

Photography Tips

Photograph these birds perched on their host animals, which provide excellent opportunities for behavioral documentation and close-ups of their distinctive yellow-and-red bills. Early morning and late afternoon light best highlights their plumage contrasts. Approach slowly and allow the birds to become accustomed to your presence, as they are generally tolerant of observers. Capture both their feeding behavior and their characteristic posture clinging to mammals, and try to document the interaction between bird and host.
