Swamp Wallaby

Identification

The swamp wallaby is a small macropod marsupial easily recognised by its distinctive bicolour coat: a grey body with a dark brown to black region on the back contrasts sharply with light yellow to rufous orange on the chest. A light-coloured cheek stripe is usually visible, and the extremities are generally darker, except for the tail tip which is often white. Males average 76 cm in length and weigh around 17 kg, while females are slightly smaller at 70 cm and 13 kg. A rare golden morph exists on the North and South Stradbroke islands, displaying yellow colouring with a white muzzle and pink or black nose and paws. Unlike other wallabies, the swamp wallaby has a distinctive gait, carrying its head low and its tail held straight out behind it.

Range & Habitat

This wallaby is found along Australia's entire east coast, from the northernmost areas of Cape York Peninsula in Queensland, down through New South Wales and Victoria to south-eastern South Australia. Its distribution has greatly expanded over the past four decades, with advances in rabbit control apparently facilitating this range extension since European settlement. The swamp wallaby favours thick undergrowth in forests and woodlands, sheltering during daylight hours in dense grass or ferns. It inhabits remarkably diverse habitats including open farmland, mallee woodland, sand-hills, and brigalow scrub in Queensland, which is a particularly preferred environment.

Behaviour & Diet

Although typically solitary, swamp wallabies often aggregate into groups while feeding. They are primarily nocturnal, emerging at night to forage. Unusually among wallabies and macropods, they prefer browsing on shrubs and bushes over grazing on grass, a preference reflected in their distinctive molar shape and the retention of the fourth premolar for cutting coarse plant material. Their diet is remarkably adaptable, encompassing native and exotic vegetation, agricultural crops, and pasture. Notably, they tolerate plants poisonous to many other animals, including brackens, hemlock and lantana. They are also opportunistic feeders, consuming fungi, bark and algae when available.

Best Time & Places to See It

Swamp wallabies are nocturnal and most active at dawn and dusk, making early morning and evening the best times for observation. They favour areas of thick vegetation where they can shelter during the day, so look for them in dense scrubland, forest edges and areas with abundant undergrowth. Their distribution across eastern Australia from Queensland to South Australia means they can be encountered across many regions, though brigalow scrub in Queensland offers particularly good habitat. Road edges are common sighting locations, though this reflects the unfortunate frequency of roadkill rather than ideal viewing conditions.

Photography Tips

The swamp wallaby's striking bicolour coat provides excellent photographic contrast, especially in soft early morning or late afternoon light. Position yourself to capture the characteristic pale chest and cheek stripe against the darker back. The distinctive head-low, tail-straight posture is a key identifying feature worth capturing. Since these animals are nocturnal and favour dense undergrowth, patience and a headlamp for night photography may be necessary. Watch for them near forest edges and dense vegetation where they emerge to feed at dusk. Their typically solitary nature means you are more likely to photograph individuals rather than groups, though aggregations at food sources offer opportunities for behavioural shots.
