Identification

The Asian palm swift is a small, streamlined bird measuring just 13 cm in length. Its most distinctive features are its long, swept-back wings that create a striking crescent or boomerang shape in flight, and its long, deeply forked tail—though the tail is usually held closed. The plumage is mainly pale brown throughout. The bird's body is notably slender, built for speed and agility in the air. Sexes are similar in appearance, while young birds can be distinguished from adults primarily by their shorter tails. The species is very similar to the African palm swift, and indeed was once considered conspecific with it.

One of the Asian palm swift's most notable anatomical adaptations is its very short legs, which it uses only for clinging to vertical surfaces; these swifts never voluntarily settle on the ground. Their loud, shrill scream is a characteristic vocalization that often betrays their presence.

Range & Habitat

The Asian palm swift is a common resident breeder throughout tropical Asia, with a range extending from India to the Philippines. It is strongly associated with oil palms and is typically found in open country and cultivation where these palms are present. The species shows a clear habitat preference for areas where palm trees are abundant.

Behaviour & Diet

The Asian palm swift spends most of its life airborne, catching insects in its beak as it flies. These swifts often feed near the ground and drink on the wing, never needing to land for hydration. Their entire lifestyle is adapted to an aerial existence.

The species has a remarkable nesting strategy: it constructs a nest from down and feathers that is glued to the underside of a palm leaf using saliva. This same saliva is also used to secure the eggs, typically two or three per clutch. This adaptation allows the swift to nest in an unusual location where predators are unlikely to find it.

Best Time & Places to See It

As a common resident breeder in tropical Asia, the Asian palm swift can be found year-round throughout its range from India to the Philippines. Any location with substantial oil palm cultivation or other palm trees will offer opportunities to observe this species. Dawn and dusk are often productive times for watching swifts, when they may be particularly active in feeding.

Photography Tips

Photographing the Asian palm swift presents a significant challenge due to its largely aerial lifestyle and rapid, acrobatic flight. The bird's distinctive crescent-shaped wing profile and forked tail are best captured when the swift is in flight. Look for feeding birds near the ground, where they may be slightly more predictable in their movements. Early morning or late afternoon light can help illuminate the pale brown plumage. A fast shutter speed and continuous autofocus are essential for tracking this swift flier. Patience and persistence are required, as the bird rarely perches voluntarily.
