Identification

The grey upper wings are particularly notable and contribute to one of its alternative names, the "grey buzzard-eagle." This species is also known as the Chilean blue eagle, black buzzard-eagle, or various combinations using "eagle" or "eagle-buzzard" in place of "buzzard-eagle."

The scientific name Geranoaetus melanoleucus reflects the bird's appearance and voice: "crane-eagle" refers to its grey upper wings and loud cries, while "melanoleucus" means black-and-white, describing the striking contrast visible from below. Though sometimes placed in the genus Buteo alongside other hawks, it is most commonly recognized in the monotypic genus Geranoaetus.
