Calilegua National Park

Where the eastern Andean slopes plunge into Argentina's subtropical lowlands, verdant cloudforests cling to ravines carved by rushing mountain streams. Spanning 2,645 square kilometres across Jujuy Province, this protected landscape encompasses five distinct ecological zones that rise from humid jungle to high-altitude grasslands. The park's 1,700-metre elevation gradient creates a cathedral of biodiversity—dense montane forests thick with epiphytic orchids and bromeliads give way to transitional woodlands, then emerge onto windswept páramo plateaus where weather-sculpted vegetation endures intense solar radiation and plummeting nights.

The park's remoteness and pristine habitat make it an absolute pilgrimage for serious birders, who come to encounter over 270 species including the resplendent Andean condor, military macaws, and the endemic Calilegua parrot. Early mornings in the cloudforest, when mist clings to dripping canopy and light filters through emerald corridors, offer unparalleled photography opportunities.
