Green-barred Woodpecker

Identification

The green-barred woodpecker is a medium-sized woodpecker, 27 to 30 cm long, with distinctive yellowish-green upperparts heavily barred with dark brown. Males display a striking head pattern with a black forehead and forecrown contrasting with a red hindcrown and nape, white lores and eye-ring, and a red malar stripe. Females lack the red malar and have red only on the hindcrown and nape. Both sexes show pale greenish underparts spotted with black on the breast and flanks. The species name melanochloros, meaning "black-green," perfectly captures this coloration. Subspecies vary considerably: the nominate form is more yellowish-green, while southern subspecies are distinctly greener and larger, with some showing golden or orange-tinged breasts and more heavily barred flanks.

The call is a distinctive "kwiek-kwik-kwik," supplemented by various other notes including "peah," "krrew," "peek," and a screechy "wheéo." Both sexes drum, though infrequently, in short rolls.

Range & Habitat

The green-barred woodpecker is found across much of southern South America, occurring in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay. Five recognized subspecies occupy different regions: the widespread nominate form inhabits southern and southeastern Brazil, southeastern Paraguay, northeastern Argentina, and much of Uruguay, while northern subspecies range into central Brazil and Bolivia. The species shows remarkable ecological versatility, occupying habitats ranging from arid desert scrub to subtropical humid forest. It prefers semi-open to open terrain including savanna, open woodland, and arid brushland, though some subspecies venture into less open lowland forests.

Generally a lowland and foothill bird, the species reaches elevations up to 3,000 meters in Bolivia. It is a year-round resident throughout most of its range, though the southernmost populations migrate northward after breeding.

Behaviour & Diet

The green-barred woodpecker is highly specialized in its foraging, with a diet composed almost entirely of ants, including their larvae and pupae. It supplements this with termites and orthopterans, and occasionally takes cactus fruits and berries. The species plays an important ecological role as the principal seed disperser for certain plant species, particularly within the Myrsine family.

Like other woodpeckers, it forages primarily by searching bark and wood for invertebrates, though its ant-specialist diet may also involve ground foraging during certain seasons or conditions.

Best Time & Places to See It

The green-barred woodpecker is present year-round throughout most of its range, making it accessible to travelers at any season. The nominate subspecies is most readily encountered in southern Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay, where it frequents open woodlands and savannas. Northern subspecies can be found in Bolivia and central Brazil in appropriate semi-open habitats. The species' preference for open terrain makes it more visible than many forest woodpeckers, particularly in savanna and brushland environments.

Look for this woodpecker in semi-open landscapes with scattered trees and bushes, where its distinctive calls often betray its presence before visual contact is made.
