Savanna Hawk

Identification

The Savanna Hawk is a large raptor measuring 46–61 cm in length and weighing approximately 845 g. Adults are distinctive with their rufous body plumage contrasted by grey mottling on the upperparts and fine black barring below. The long, broad wings display black flight feathers, while the banded black and white tail is striking in flight. Yellow legs are a key identifying feature, and notably, this species has strikingly long legs that are visible even when perched. The bird characteristically perches in an upright, vertical posture. Immature birds are similar to adults but appear darker and duller overall, with paler underparts showing coarser barring and a whitish supercilium. The species produces a loud, distinctive scream described as "keeeeru," a useful aid for field identification.

Range & Habitat

The Savanna Hawk is found in open savanna and swamp edges across a broad geographic range extending from Panama and Trinidad south through South America to Bolivia, Uruguay, and central Argentina. Interestingly, the species has also been reported in California, with documented sightings from 1973 in Alameda County and from 1974 in San Diego County, suggesting occasional range expansion northward. The species shows a clear preference for open country with scattered trees, avoiding densely forested regions in favour of the grasslands and wetland margins where it hunts most effectively.

Behaviour & Diet

The Savanna Hawk is an opportunistic and versatile hunter with a diverse diet reflecting its ecological role as a generalist predator. It feeds on small mammals and small birds, reptiles including lizards, snakes, and toads, amphibians such as frogs, and aquatic prey including eels, fish, and crabs. The species also consumes invertebrates such as spiders and large insects like grasshoppers, and has even been recorded taking roots. Its hunting strategy typically involves perching prominently on high, open vantage points from which it swoops down on unsuspecting prey. However, the species is sufficiently adaptable to hunt on foot when necessary. A particularly striking behaviour is the gathering of several birds at grass fires, presumably to take advantage of prey flushed by the flames.

Best Time & Places to See It

Savanna Hawks are best observed in open savanna landscapes and wetland margins where they favour prominent perching spots. The species' habit of perching openly and conspicuously makes it relatively easy to locate in suitable habitat. The broad geographic range from Central America to central Argentina offers numerous opportunities for encounters across different regions and seasons. Their presence at grass fires, when such events occur, provides particularly reliable viewing opportunities.

Photography Tips

The Savanna Hawk's characteristic vertical perching posture and preference for open, high vantage points make it an excellent photography subject. The striking rufous and black plumage, contrasting yellow legs, and long-winged silhouette photograph well in good light. The bird's conspicuous behaviour and habit of remaining exposed on open perches allows photographers to approach and frame shots more readily than with many other raptors. Action shots of the bird in flight or swooping from its perch will showcase the elegant black flight feathers and banded tail to advantage.
