Sepia-capped Flycatcher

Identification

The sepia-capped flycatcher is a small tyrant flycatcher measuring 11.5 to 14 cm in length and weighing approximately 12 grams. Both sexes share identical plumage. The nominate subspecies displays a distinctive sepia-brown crown with a paler nape, dull yellowish-olive lores, and a dusky patch on the rear ear coverts. The face is light olive, the back and rump olive-green, and the uppertail coverts russet brown. The wings are dusky with pale yellowish-olive edges on the flight feathers and two buff to ochraceous buff wing bars. The throat is grayish-olive with faint white streaks, while the breast and flanks are light olive and the belly yellowish-white to yellow. Six subspecies occur across the species' range, each showing subtle variations in coloration: some have cinnamon tones on the tail, others appear grayer or darker in the crown.

Range & Habitat

This species is found from southern Mexico through Central America and across much of South America, with a disjunct distribution reflecting six distinct subspecies. It ranges from the Caribbean and Pacific slopes of Central America through Colombia, Venezuela, the Guianas, Brazil, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay, and into northern Argentina, with vagrant records from Uruguay. The sepia-capped flycatcher inhabits lowland evergreen forest, mature secondary forest, and plantations in tropical and lower subtropical zones, from sea level to 1,300 meters in Central America, and reaching up to 1,600 meters in parts of Venezuela and 1,300 meters in Peru.

Behaviour & Diet

A year-round resident throughout its range, the sepia-capped flycatcher forages in the forest understory and middle levels, typically within 8 meters of the ground. It feeds on insects and fruits, using a combination of techniques: hover-gleaning, short sallies from perches to snatch prey, and occasional aerial captures. It typically forages singly or in pairs and regularly joins mixed-species feeding flocks. The species produces a loud, harsh song variously described as an explosive, chattery outburst with sputtering or semimusical qualities, along with softer descending rattles and quiet calls.

Best Time & Places to See It

The sepia-capped flycatcher can be encountered year-round throughout its range. Prime locations include lowland evergreen forests and mature secondary growth in Mexico and Central America, the Caribbean and Pacific slopes of Costa Rica and Panama, and the humid forests of Colombia, Venezuela, the Guianas, and Amazonian Brazil. Look for this species in the forest understory where it quietly forages, often revealed by its loud, distinctive song. It is generally inconspicuous but responsive to playback of its vocalizations.

Photography Tips

Photographing this small, understory specialist requires patience and familiarity with its habitat. Position yourself in lowland forest where the bird forages between 2 and 8 meters above ground. Early morning and late afternoon produce the best light in the dappled understory. Since the species often joins mixed-species flocks, following feeding flocks through the forest increases encounter rates. A telephoto lens of 300mm or longer will be necessary to capture adequate detail from typical foraging distances. The bird's dark crown, olive upperparts, and lighter underparts provide good contrast for photography, particularly in filtered forest light.
