White-crested Tyrannulet

Identification

The white-crested tyrannulet is a diminutive tyrant flycatcher, measuring just 11 cm long and weighing 6 to 8.6 grams. Its most distinctive feature is a white central crown stripe usually hidden but occasionally raised as a small crest, set against a gray crown and nape. The face is grayish-white with a thin white supercilium, a partial white eye-ring, and a dusky line through the eye. Upperparts are grayish-olive, while the wings are dusky with pale buffy edges to flight feathers and two whitish wing bars. The tail is dusky with white edges on outer feathers. The throat and chin are white, the breast gray, and the belly pale yellow. Both sexes appear identical, with dark brown iris, black bill, and gray legs and feet. Subspecies S. s. straminea has a brighter yellow belly, while the larger S. s. munda shows whiter underparts and brighter white wing bars.

Range & Habitat

This species is distributed across much of central and eastern South America, from Bolivia and Brazil south through Paraguay to northeastern Argentina and Uruguay. It inhabits diverse landscapes including tropical forest edges, deciduous woodlands, gallery forests, thorn scrub, cerrado, plantations, gardens, and agricultural areas. It ranges from sea level to 2,800 m elevation in Brazil, up to 700 m in Argentina, and 2,900 m in Bolivia. In the non-breeding season, it shows a preference for more open habitats such as scrublands and agricultural areas.

Behaviour & Diet

The white-crested tyrannulet feeds exclusively on small insects, which it captures through active foraging among scrubby vegetation. It gleans prey while perched or while hovering briefly after short flights, and occasionally catches insects in mid-air. The subspecies S. s. munda is migratory, breeding in western Bolivia and Argentina before moving east to winter in north-central Bolivia, southeastern Brazil, and Uruguay, while the nominate subspecies and S. s. straminea appear to be year-round residents. The species breeds from August to January in Brazil and Argentina, with both sexes constructing an open cup nest woven tightly from grass and plant fibers, decorated with lichens and spider egg sacks, and lined with feathers and plant wool. Nests are typically well-hidden in thorny bushes up to 6 meters high. Clutches usually contain two eggs, with incubation lasting 13–15 days and fledging occurring 13–14 days after hatching. Both parents share incubation and feeding duties.

The white-crested tyrannulet is fairly common to common throughout its range and inhabits many protected areas. Its migratory movements mean timing varies by location: breeding occurs August to January in southern populations. The species is adaptable to converted habitats, making it accessible in gardens, plantations, and agricultural areas as well as natural scrublands and woodland edges. Look for it in open or semi-open habitats, particularly during the non-breeding season when it favors scrubby terrain.

The tiny size and active foraging behavior of this species presents both challenges and opportunities. Search for birds moving actively through low scrubby vegetation, where their small size and muted plumage require patience to locate. The white crown stripe is rarely visible unless the bird raises its crest in alarm or territorial displays, so photograph from multiple angles to capture this distinctive feature. Early morning and late afternoon light will reveal the subtle gray, olive, and yellow tones of the plumage more effectively than harsh midday sun. The bird's gleaning behavior and brief hovering flights offer opportunities for action shots, though fast shutter speeds are essential given its quick movements and small profile.
