Rufous-bellied Thrush

Identification

The rufous-bellied thrush is named for its distinctive reddish-orange underparts, which contrast with darker upperparts. This medium-sized songbird reaches approximately 25 cm in length and typically weighs around 59–68 g in males and 64–78 g in females. Females tend to be plumper than males, though their legs are slightly shorter on average.

Range & Habitat

This species is distributed across most of eastern and southeastern Brazil—from Maranhão state south to Rio Grande do Sul—and also occurs in Bolivia, Paraguay, Uruguay, and central Argentina. It inhabits forests and urban wooded areas, making it one of the most common birds throughout much of southeastern Brazil. It has been Brazil's national bird since 2002 and the state bird of São Paulo since 1966.

Behaviour & Diet

An omnivorous and highly vocal species, the rufous-bellied thrush feeds primarily on fruits and arthropods. Its distinctive song is particularly prominent in afternoons and especially during nights between August and November, when thousands sing until sunrise. The bird is often seen moving through bushes as part of mixed-species feeding flocks. It has even been observed competing with common marmosets for food flushed by army ant columns during the dry season.

Best Time & Places to See It

August through November offers the best opportunity to hear the species' famous nocturnal chorus. The bird is widely distributed and common across southeastern Brazil, making it accessible to travellers visiting forests and wooded urban areas throughout its range. Peak breeding activity occurs from October to March in northwestern Argentina, with most nesting in November–December.

Photography Tips

The rufous-bellied thrush's striking orange-red belly provides excellent contrast for photography. Look for individuals in mixed-species flocks moving through mid-story vegetation, typically 4–5 meters above ground where they forage. Early morning and late afternoon visits to forests and parks in southeastern Brazil offer the best light and activity levels. The bird's relatively common presence and lack of extreme wariness make it an excellent subject for both field photographers and bird watchers.
