Guira Tanager

Identification

The guira tanager is a small tanager measuring 13–14 cm in length and weighing around 12 g. Sexual dimorphism is pronounced in this species. Males are more brightly colored, displaying olive-green upperparts separated from a black face and throat by a striking bright yellow margin. A rufous-orange breast contrasts sharply with a greenish to grayish stomach. The wing feathers are blackish with greenish edges. Females are more subdued, with entirely olive-green upperparts, greenish-yellow underparts, and a whitish stomach.

Range & Habitat

This South American endemic is widespread across the continent, ranging from Colombia south through Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay, and Argentina, as well as the Guianas. Eight recognized subspecies occupy different regions throughout this vast range. The species inhabits subtropical and tropical moist lowland forests, and has shown a remarkable ability to adapt to heavily degraded former forest habitats, making it more resilient to habitat loss than many forest specialists.

Behaviour & Diet

Like other tanagers, the guira tanager is primarily an insectivorous bird, foraging in the canopy and mid-story levels of its forest habitat. Its small size and acrobatic feeding behavior are typical of the tanager family, though detailed observations of its specific foraging techniques and social structure remain limited in available literature.

The guira tanager's wide distribution across lowland forests from Colombia to Argentina offers multiple opportunities for observation. The species can be encountered throughout its range in suitable moist lowland forest habitats, including degraded areas where other forest birds may be absent. Its presence across so many countries and regions means that dedicated birdwatchers exploring tropical South American forests have reasonable chances of encountering it year-round in appropriate habitat.

The male guira tanager's striking pattern—with its bright yellow facial margin contrasting against black and olive-green plumage—offers excellent photographic potential. The bird's small size and preference for canopy and mid-story levels require patience and attention to light conditions.
