Mountain Wren

Identification

The mountain wren is a tiny bird, measuring 10.5 to 11.5 cm in length and weighing around 11.8 g. Despite its diminutive size, it is remarkably colorful. The nominate subspecies displays a rufous-brown forehead and crown, with warmer buff tones on the supercilium and cheeks. Its back, shoulders, and rump are less reddish brown, while the tail is rufous-brown with narrow black barring. The wings also show distinctive barring. The throat and chest are warm buff, gradually paling to a lighter buff on the belly, with buffy-brown flanks barred in darker tones. Juveniles are duller overall, with grayish-brown underparts marked by darker speckles.

Subspecific variation exists across the mountain wren's range. The solitarius subspecies has darker cheeks and upperparts with a paler throat, while macrourus is notably larger with a longer tail and a white breast center. Other subspecies show subtle differences in supercilium color, tail length, and redness of the upperparts, making them challenging to distinguish in the field.
