Blue-headed Parrot

Identification

The blue-headed parrot is a medium-sized parrot, approximately 27–28 cm (11 in) in length and weighing around 245 g (8.6 oz). It is unmistakable in its plumage: the body is predominantly green, while the head, neck, and upper breast are striking blue. Red undertail coverts provide a vivid flash of colour beneath the tail, and the wing coverts show some yellowish tones. The upper mandible is black with distinctive reddish areas on both sides, and dark ear patches are visible on the face. Males and females are alike in appearance. Juveniles can be distinguished by less extensive blue on the head and red or pinkish feathers around the ceres, gradually acquiring their full adult plumage over up to two years.

Three subspecies are recognized, each with subtle variations. The nominate subspecies is found throughout most of the species' South American range. The subspecies rubrigularis, from southern Central America and the Chocó region, displays paler overall plumage and typically a pinkish throat patch. The subspecies reichenowi, from Brazil's Atlantic Forest, features a paler bill and predominantly blue underparts.

Range & Habitat

The blue-headed parrot is distributed across tropical and subtropical South America and southern Central America, ranging from Costa Rica and Venezuela south to Bolivia and Brazil, with an isolated population on the Caribbean island of Trinidad. In South America, it is primarily an Amazonian species, with its southeastern limit marked by the Araguaia-Tocantins River system. A disjunct population inhabits Brazil's Atlantic coast, stretching approximately 1,500 km from Pernambuco in the north to Espírito Santo in the south. The species avoids the northern Andes cordillera and certain areas of central Venezuela and northern Colombia.

The bird favours forest and semi-open country, including cultivated areas, and is largely restricted to humid or semi-humid regions. Locally, it extends into drier habitats, particularly along river corridors where moisture is more abundant.

Behaviour & Diet

Blue-headed parrots are highly social and noisy birds, though their calls are notably high-pitched and squeaking rather than the loud, raucous sounds produced by some larger parrot species. They make characteristic "sweenk" vocalizations. The species roosts communally in palm trees and other vegetation, and large congregations can be observed at roost sites during dawn and dusk hours, making these periods particularly rewarding for observation and photography.

Their diet consists primarily of fruit and seeds, with grain consumed opportunistically. They breed in tree cavities, where females lay clutches of three to five white eggs. Incubation lasts approximately 26 days, and young birds fledge about 70 days after hatching. Despite their popularity as pets—where they are valued for being comparatively quiet relative to other parrot species and for their affectionate nature—they are not renowned for their talking ability.

Best Time & Places to See It

Dawn and dusk are the most productive times to locate blue-headed parrots, when large numbers gather at communal roost sites. The species is widely distributed across its range, but key regions include the Amazon Basin, with particular concentrations in areas of humid forest and forest-edge habitat. The disjunct Atlantic Forest population along Brazil's southeastern coast offers an alternative location for observing the species, particularly the reichenowi subspecies with its distinctive blue-tinged underparts.

Forest and semi-open habitats, including cultivated areas adjacent to natural vegetation, are productive search areas. Listening for the characteristic high-pitched squeaking calls can aid in locating birds during daylight hours, while visiting known roost sites during transition periods offers the best opportunity for seeing large numbers.

Photography Tips

The blue head, neck, and upper breast contrasting sharply with green plumage and red undertail coverts make this species visually striking, but the blue tones can present exposure challenges. Meter carefully to avoid underexposing the darker blue areas while preserving highlight detail in the green body plumage. The red undertail coverts are particularly vibrant when the bird takes flight or adjusts its posture.

Visit roost sites at dawn or dusk to capture birds arriving or departing, when activity is highest and multiple individuals may be visible. The communal roosting behaviour offers excellent opportunities for capturing group compositions. In better lighting conditions during midday, seek birds feeding or perched in trees, positioning yourself to capture the diagnostic blue hood and contrasting green body to best effect. Patient observation often yields opportunities to photograph the characteristically high-pitched vocalization postures.
